It’s been over nine years since Stranger Things became a huge hit, and now, before the final season premieres, the show has clarified something about how the first season ended. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix in three parts, with the first part arriving on November 26th. This has Netflix increasing promotion, and fans are busy making last-minute predictions. The new episodes promise to finally answer major questions about Vecna and the Upside Down, but the series has already unexpectedly solved one long-standing mystery.
The first season of Stranger Things centers on the disappearance of Will Byers. While we knew he was stuck in the Upside Down, we didn’t see much of what he experienced there. Now, Netflix has released the opening scene from season 5, giving us a glimpse into those events. This five-minute scene expands on Will’s story from season 1, explaining what happened during his time away and even changing how we understand the first season’s ending, which raises the stakes for the characters going forward.
Stranger Things Season 5’s Opening Reveals Vecna’s Role In Everything

A new clip from the upcoming season of Stranger Things shows Will Byers fleeing a Demogorgon in the Upside Down. However, the real danger appears when the Demogorgon captures him, bringing him to the Creel House and delivering him to Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). This scene connects the series back to its origins and confirms that Vecna has been the mastermind all along. Vecna reveals this control to Will, exposing him to the Mind Flayer and ominously stating, “We are going to do such beautiful things together, William.”
Okay, as a huge Stranger Things fan, this scene totally flipped how I see Season 1. I always thought Will got out of the Upside Down because Joyce never gave up and his friends worked so hard to rescue him. But now, realizing Vecna was involved… that changes everything! It really seems like Vecna let Will escape, and if that’s true, it makes those first few episodes look completely different. Honestly, it’s a bit scary because it hints at an even bigger, more powerful villain waiting for us in Season 5.

Stranger Things Just Turned Season 1’s Victory Into A Defeat

Learning that Vecna was the one who brought Will back to Hawkins completely changes how we view the ending of Stranger Things Season 1 – what felt like a win now feels like a loss. While it’s understandable to be happy when Joyce and Hopper rescue Will from the Upside Down, Season 5 might show that rescue in a new, darker light. It’s possible the characters have been succeeding in small fights, but ultimately losing the bigger battle. It doesn’t mean all hope is gone, but it increasingly seems like Vecna has been manipulating events in Stranger Things from the very beginning.
It’s become clear that Will’s connection to the Mind Flayer and Vecna isn’t just a result of what happened in the Upside Down. Vecna is using Will, even if Will doesn’t realize it, and that could cause big trouble for the group in the final season of Stranger Things. If Vecna deliberately allowed them to win past battles, he’s an even more dangerous enemy. They only narrowly defeated him in Season 4, suggesting he has a hidden plan, which is very worrying as they head into Season 5.
What This Change Means For The Netflix Show’s Final Season

If Will is central to Vecna’s plan to control Hawkins, the final season of Stranger Things could be a heartbreaking story for him. The show’s creators and actors have hinted that Will will be more important in the last chapter, and the opening scene reveals why. This likely means Will, rather than Eleven, will be the one who has to fix things. He may even have to make a significant sacrifice to restore Hawkins to how it was before Vecna used him to take over.
Even if the danger isn’t extreme, revealing Vecna as the source of all the past seasons’ problems significantly raises the stakes for the final season. It suggests he’s a much more cunning and calculating villain than we thought, making it harder for the heroes to defeat him in Stranger Things Season 5. As a result, we’ll likely approach the series’ conclusion feeling anxious and uncertain. Hopefully, Vecna will miss some key detail, despite all his years of preparation.
