Disney+’s Wonder Man started Marvel’s 2026 plans with a gentle but well-made introduction. However, the upcoming Phase 6 will be different. Marvel finished Phase 5 with Thunderbolts and Ironheart, wrapping up a period that had both great successes, like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and disappointing entries, such as Secret Invasion.
Despite concerns that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular period might be over and audiences were tiring of superhero films, Phase 6 started well last year. The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicked off the final part of the Multiverse Saga in July, introducing Marvel’s First Family with a talented cast, stunning visuals, and a grand science fiction story that saw Earth-828 face off against Galactus.
The revival, with its style reminiscent of 1960s visions of the future, kicked off a pattern seen in the next three projects of Phase 6. These projects largely focused on brand new stories, characters, and franchises. This feeling of innovation was clear in the detailed exploration of Wakanda in Eyes of Wakanda, the intense, mature-themed zombie apocalypse of Marvel Zombies, and the satirical take on Hollywood in Wonder Man.
According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Phase 6 of the MCU is shaping up to be its strongest phase yet. He says it will be the most focused story arc so far, which likely influenced the choice to emphasize well-known characters and existing storylines.
However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans for the rest of 2026 will be different, with a greater emphasis on continuing existing stories through sequels and new seasons on Disney+.
Fans can look forward to more content from the Spider-Man and Avengers universes, including new storylines based on ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘Doomsday’. Existing shows like X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Daredevil: Born Again will also be returning with fresh seasons. Disney+’s VisionQuest is the most original project announced, but it’s being positioned as a continuation of the story begun in WandaVision, effectively making it a sequel.

Why the MCU’s Phase 6 Strategy Change Makes Sense
As a huge MCU fan, it’s starting to feel like things are really ramping up for the finale of this Multiverse Saga! It makes total sense that Marvel is keeping the focus tighter now, especially with those big crossover events coming. I think they’re really honing in on the next Avengers movies, and that’s probably why we’re getting so many cool new shows and animated series in the meantime – it lets them build things up without overshadowing the main event.
The third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which concluded the Infinity Saga, primarily focused on characters already established – Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel – because they were key to the events of Infinity War and Endgame. Now, Marvel Studios might be planning a similar approach for its next major storyline, bringing together existing heroes and plotlines instead of introducing many new ones.
Marvel Studios seems to be taking a similar approach with its Multiverse Saga, primarily focusing on introducing the Fantastic Four and Wonder Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character, Simon Williams, might appear in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, his project was already in development and scheduled for release before those major events, so his role may not be as central as that of the Fantastic Four.
Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe received a lot of criticism, largely because it introduced many new characters who haven’t reappeared yet. Marvel Studios will likely hold off on introducing even more new heroes until after the Secret Wars movie. Reports suggest that this will include the 11 X-Men characters expected to debut in the Phase 7 reboot.
