Among the summer anime releases generating a lot of excitement this year, it’s worth noting that one relatively unknown title, Tougen Anki, has quietly gained popularity and warrants more discussions. The manga had a substantial fanbase prior to its adaptation into an anime, but the fact that it’s already outperforming some well-established series in terms of viewership is quite remarkable and unexpected.
On Netflix‘s official site, it has been confirmed that the new series, Tougen Anki, is currently the 5th most-watched non-English show worldwide from July 14th to July 20th, outperforming shows like Squid Game‘s second season, The Summer Hikaru Died, and Delirum. In just a week, it has garnered 2 million views. Surprisingly, despite minimal buzz and anticipation leading up to its premiere, the series has already become significantly more popular than expected. Other hits such as Gachiakuta and Sakamoto Days Season 1, Part 2 were highly anticipated, but it appears that this new exorcist anime could soon find itself in more top rankings as it approaches the second half of its first season.
Summer’s Hidden Hit Is Already Revealed
Shiki Ichinose, a headstrong teenager residing with his adoptive dad Tsuyoshi, experiences a tumultuous turn of events when an unexpected assassin strikes them. In the wake of this assault, Shiki uncovers a startling revelation—he is in fact an Oni, and Tsuyoshi was previously Momotarou, a warrior who once pursued Onis before abandoning that path to raise him. Tragically, Tsuyoshi meets his end, leaving Shiki no choice but to navigate the intricate conflict between the Oni and the Momotarou clans. With his life turned upside down, he vows to make it through this struggle and seek justice for his father’s passing.
Hailing from the same animation studio that brought us “Classroom of the Elite” and “Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun,” this series boasts some stunning visuals. Its unique blend of action violence and exorcism themes has already proven successful, and if it maintains this course, it could very well become a surprise hit amidst the crowded summer 2025 anime season. Despite the rather unremarkable characters at this point, there’s a lot of potential for development, as evidenced by just the first three episodes.
