The manga world was surprised when Weekly Shonen Jump decided to end Kaedegami, a promising new series by Jun Harukawa. Kaedegami is a historical fantasy story set in a world filled with dangerous demonic monsters called Shenguai. It centers around Kou, an orphaned boy who lives with a Shenguai named Chiyou, a creature with a dark history. Despite not being human, Chiyou has earned Kou’s complete trust, and he’s determined to protect her. The manga launched in June and quickly gained attention for its compelling story and original concept. However, it will conclude with Chapter 17 on October 19th, 2025. What’s particularly surprising is that the publisher canceled the series before the first collected volume even comes out on November 4th, 2025.
Following the news that a manga series was ending, the popular X (formerly Twitter) account @WSJ_manga, which shares updates on *Shonen Jump*, reported that the magazine will launch three new series in the upcoming issues. This announcement sparked rumors that two more series might be cancelled to make room for the new ones. The series most likely to be cancelled are *Ekiden Bros* by Daiki Nono and *Ping-Pong Peril* by Yoshiharu Kataoka, as both currently have fewer than 19 chapters – similar to another recently cancelled series.
Weekly Shonen Jump’s Promising Lineup Hints at a Looming Purge
Next week’s issue (#48) of Weekly Shonen Jump will debut three new manga series. Here’s the lineup: ‘Gonron Egg’ by Tanizaki Shuhei (also known as Ware wa Ryujin) will launch in issue #48, followed by ‘Tonari no Osoegawa’ by Hideaki Nabe in issue #49, and ‘JK Yuusha to Inkyo Maou’ by Hatsubina Matsuri in issue #50.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, it’s very probable that Weekly Shonen Jump will continue to cancel more series to make space for new ones. Compared to titles like *Kaedegami*, *Ekiden Bros*, and *Ping-Pong Peril*, these particular sports manga are even less well-known, suggesting they might be canceled soon. Every year, WSJ launches several new manga, and unfortunately, that also means a similar number of series are discontinued. While it’s unusual for a series to end with fewer than 19 chapters, it does happen occasionally.
Typically, publishers wait a year and release around 50-60 chapters – several volumes – to gauge a series’ success. Sadly, *Kaedegami* didn’t even have that chance, and the other two new series might face the same issue. The new lineup is still encouraging, though, with each series offering a distinct setting. *Gonron Egg* by Tanizaki Shuhei especially stands out as a fantasy series, which is clear from its cover art. It will be featured prominently with a lead cover in Issue 48, immediately following the conclusion of *Kaedegami* in Issue 47.
Shuhei’s manga, *Kaijuu no Buki Shokunin*, first appeared in *Shonen Jump+* and later continued as a short four-chapter series in *Jump GIGA*. Also debuting in Issue 49 is *Tonari no Osoegawa* by Hideaki Nabe, a continuation of his 2022 one-shot story published in WSJ. Finally, *JK Yuusha to Inkyo Maou* by Hatsubina Matsuri will be another fantasy series. Like the other two, this manga comes from an author who has previously published short stories in Shueisha’s magazines.
