Netflix is starting 2026 strong with a bunch of new anime series. The streaming service has been investing more in anime lately, as the popularity of the genre continues to skyrocket. With a huge selection of anime films and shows already available, and more added each month, Netflix is always expanding its offerings. This January brings some exciting news for fans, including the arrival of a classic: Magic Knight Rayearth. This fantasy anime, based on the popular manga by the renowned Japanese group CLAMP, is sure to please longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Besides their popular action-fantasy series, CLAMP is also known for creating famous manga like Cardcaptor Sakura, Blood-C, and xxxHOLiC. They originally designed the characters for the Code Geass franchise as well. While Magic Knight Rayearth is considered CLAMP’s most famous work, it will finally be available on Netflix starting January 15th, 2026. What’s on Netflix reports that the first season will launch on the same day as Love Through a Prism, a new series from the creator of Boys Over Flowers. Anime fans should also note that the first season of the popular Gintama series will start streaming that day, making it a huge day for anime releases!
What Is Magic Knight Rayearth About?

The story begins with three high schools mysteriously transported to another world after receiving a distress call. There, the students discover they are destined to be Magic Knights and must train their abilities to protect the world. Coincidentally, three of the students – Hikaru Shido, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji – meet during a normal school trip to Tokyo Tower.
The girls never expected their lives to change so dramatically, especially not after a strange woman asked for their help—and a giant flying fish carried them away! They soon find themselves in a new world, learning that Princess Emeraude brought them there for an important reason. These ordinary girls discover they are the prophesied Magic Knights, tasked with saving Cephiro, a land now in chaos because the High Priest Zagato has imprisoned the princess. Despite their hesitation, the Magic Knights dedicate themselves to rescuing the princess and freeing Cephiro from Zagato’s evil grip.
I watched the anime over two seasons, and while we’re still waiting for a release date for the second season, it sounds like we might hear something in a few months. It’s an exciting time for fans because they’re also celebrating the 30th anniversary with a brand new anime project coming out this year – though details on that are still to come. If you’re interested in checking out the original series, you can find it streaming on Crunchyroll.
