Wes Craven’s Scream, released in 1996, is widely considered a landmark horror film. It breathed new life into the horror genre of the 1990s with its clever, self-aware take on the slasher whodunit, starring Neve Campbell. The film spawned a successful 30-year franchise, recently continuing with the somewhat controversial Scream 7, which brought the focus back to Sidney Prescott and her daughter Tatum after several films centered on a new group of characters. While opinions on Scream 7 are mixed, fans can now enjoy what many consider the best Scream movie since the original on Netflix.
Netflix began streaming the 2022 horror film Scream on April 10th, and it’s considered one of the best in the series. This movie was the first Scream installment in over a decade, following Scream 4 from 2011, and kicked off a revival of the franchise by Spyglass Media Group. Set 25 years after the original film, a new Ghostface terrorizes a group of teenagers who have connections to the deadly events in Woodsboro. As sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter and their friends become targets, the original survivors – Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley – return to solve the mystery.
Scream (2022) Was a Near-Perfect Requel
Bringing back the Scream franchise after eleven years was a big challenge, but the new movie pulled it off remarkably well. It successfully blended familiar elements with a fresh story, featuring returning characters guiding a new generation through another series of murders in Woodsboro. The film kept the clever, suspenseful style of the original 1996 Scream, offering the self-aware commentary that fans love. It also cleverly addressed modern horror trends, social media, and the idea of revisiting old stories, all while showcasing some of the most intense and shocking kills in the series.
The latest film in the series successfully introduced a new generation of characters and captivated both critics and audiences. It received a “Certified Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes with a 76% score from critics and an impressive 82% audience rating – the second-highest in the entire franchise. The film was also a commercial success, earning $138 million worldwide and ensuring the series will continue with three more installments, including Scream 8, which is now in development with Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing the script after the positive reception to Scream 7.
Other Horror Movies Now on Netflix
Netflix is expanding its already strong collection of horror movies this April. Along with classics like Scream, they’ve recently added titles such as Beast, starring Idris Elba, and their original shark thriller, Thrash. More scary movies are coming throughout the month, including A Quiet Place Part II on April 11th, Halloween Ends on April 13th, and Him from 2025 on April 19th.
