The last time audiences saw Jason Voorhees terrorizing Camp Crystal Lake in a new movie was February 13th, 2009. Since then, the Friday the 13th series has been stalled by a legal battle over who owns the film rights. Over the past sixteen years, the franchise has faded from public view, while other classic horror series have made big comebacks. For example, Halloween released its thirteenth film and had a reboot that became the highest-grossing slasher movie ever. Scream has also returned successfully, and other horror franchises have seen similar revivals.
Fans have reason to be excited! A deal was recently made, and Jason Universe’s involvement confirms that plans for the franchise are moving forward quickly. This means new merchandise is on the way (with Jason featured in a new ad campaign), and production can finally begin on a new Friday the 13th movie, alongside the TV series that’s been in development for a long time. There are new updates on both projects now, so get ready to see that famous machete again!
Friday the 13th Franchise Is Finally Alive After More Than a Decade
Brad Caleb Kane, the creator and showrunner of the upcoming Crystal Lake series on Peacock, recently shared some insights into the show. He told EW that the series, starring Linda Cardellini as Jason Voorhees’ mother, Pamela, isn’t just drawing inspiration from slasher films. He’s also looking to capture the feeling of the 1970s – a time marked by widespread paranoia and a lack of trust in authority – which was prevalent around the time the original Friday the 13th was made.
Kane described the show as a psychological thriller, reminiscent of paranoid films from the 1970s. While it shares elements with slasher films, it doesn’t quite fit the genre. It features a lot of bloodshed and creative, memorable deaths, but these serve to develop the characters, themes, and setting rather than being the main focus.
However, director Mike P. Nelson, known for the “Sweet Revenge” ad featuring Jason and the upcoming Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot, has confirmed a new movie is in development. He’s also expressed his strong interest in directing it.
According to Nelson, discussions are definitely underway. He confirmed he’s been directly informed about the project and has shared his input with the team. While he can’t reveal details, he’s offered his perspective, and now it’s up to them to decide how to proceed. He’s also mentioned that others have contacted him regarding the project.
There’s no confirmed release date for either the Crystal Lake series or the next Friday the 13th movie, but 2026 could be a significant year for the franchise. Interestingly, next year will have three Friday the 13ths – in February, March, and November – something that hasn’t happened since 2015. While it might be wishful thinking, these dates could be used to announce news about either project. After more than ten years of waiting, fans finally have something to look forward to.
