After The Fantastic Four: First Steps, I Can Actually Picture This Controversial Romance in the MCU

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited by the possibility of seeing one of their most talked-about love stories play out in the MCU, especially after what happened in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel Studios has finally nailed a live-action Fantastic Four, and Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are fantastic as the First Family from Earth 828! Their first adventure together, set four years into their time as the Fantastic Four, saw them battling Galactus (voiced brilliantly by Ralph Ineson) and the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) – and they managed to save the world, and their new baby, Franklin Richards!

I’m so excited for this new take on the Fantastic Four! Seeing them in The Fantastic Four: First Steps feels like just the beginning. Knowing they’re already set to team up with the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 is incredible, and I can’t wait to see them in even more Marvel movies down the line. It opens up so many possibilities for bringing those classic Fantastic Four stories to life on screen – even the really dramatic, soap opera-like romances that I honestly never expected to see in the MCU!

Sue Storm & Reed Richards Don’t Have An Easy Relationship in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

In the upcoming live-action film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) and Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), played by Pascal and Kirby respectively, are already married. However, their relationship isn’t perfect; they frequently disagree on important things, and this will likely continue when they join the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite recently becoming parents to their son, Franklin Richards, who possesses incredible cosmic power, their marriage could face even more challenges in future MCU stories.

Throughout The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Reed Richards and Sue Storm argue several times, mainly because Reed constantly relies on logic, calculations, and always anticipates the worst possible outcome. For example, he even considers handing their son, Franklin, over to Galactus to save the planet, which Sue strongly objects to, telling him his actions sometimes cause her pain. There’s another tense exchange when Reed proposes using Franklin as bait to trap Galactus, and these conflicts make Sue wonder if she might be better off with someone else.

Namor’s Personality in the MCU Includes Qualities Sue Storm Values

In Marvel comics, Sue Storm finds herself romantically drawn to both Reed Richards and Namor, the mutant king of Atlantis. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tenoch Huerta Mejía portrays Namor as the ruler of Talokan, a nation rich in vibranium. He recently clashed with Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever but eventually reached a fragile peace with Shuri (Letitia Wright). Considering the conflicts between Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it’s possible Namor could become a romantic distraction for Sue Storm in future MCU films.

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Namor was presented as a strong, principled, and fiercely loyal leader – qualities that could appeal to Sue Storm. Unlike Reed Richards, who considered sacrificing family for the greater good, Namor prioritizes protecting his people at all costs. This dedication might make Storm see something admirable in him when they inevitably meet. That meeting could happen in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, as both Namor’s actors will be in the film, or in future Fantastic Four movies.

I Hope the MCU Ignores Some of the More Controversial Aspects of Namor & Sue Storm’s Marvel Romance

Although a romance between Sue Storm and Namor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is possible, especially if Reed Richards creates problems in their relationship, there’s one aspect of their history Marvel should definitely avoid repeating. In the comics, dating back to 1962’s Fantastic Four #4, the relationship between Sue Storm and Namor was deeply unhealthy. Namor consistently put Sue down, controlled her, and was abusive. He even kidnapped her to prevent Reed from proposing, and at times, tried to eliminate her friends so she’d be completely dependent on him.

In the main Marvel Comics storyline, Sue Storm has always chosen to stay with Reed Richards, even though she’s felt drawn to Namor. However, in some alternate universes, she has ended up with Namor. Despite repeatedly affirming her loyalty to Richards, Namor constantly pursues her, claiming they share a unique connection. His behavior towards Storm – including aggressive advances, verbal and physical abuse, manipulation, and obsessive control – is something the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be better off avoiding. That said, Marvel could revise the more troubling parts of their history to create compelling drama for the Fantastic Four in future stories.
