Despite enjoying recent TV appearances in the sitcom Changing Ends and the game show The Celebrity Traitors, Alan Carr has made it clear he doesn’t plan to pursue a career in acting.
In both films, the comedian skillfully portrayed himself, either offering humorous commentary on his younger years or exaggerating his well-known public image to deflect attention.
Even though his show, Changing Ends, has been very popular and was recently nominated in our poll for the greatest modern comedy (you can still vote until March 24th!), Carr told TopMob he doesn’t want to become an actor.
He said he’s amazed by actors’ ability to perform under such basic conditions. He described their dressing rooms as essentially small, portable toilets with mirrors, where they quickly prepare, deliver their lines, and then return.

I’m not interested in acting in a sitcom; I prefer stand-up comedy,” Carr explained, when asked about future projects beyond his show, Changing Ends. “I really enjoy it – quickly tell your jokes and then leave! That’s the appeal for me.”
Jimmy Carr says his recent sitcom, Changing Ends, which is finishing its third season and has already been renewed for a fourth, was intentionally created as a classic, family-friendly comedy – a different style than his usual stand-up routines.
He explained that he intentionally kept the writing clean, avoiding any profanity or potentially offensive content. He aimed to create a classic, family-friendly sitcom, the kind he enjoyed watching with his family as a child.

I set out to write jokes that were clever and funny without relying on swear words. I was aiming for classic, relatable humor – a bit of a departure, actually, because my stand-up routines usually include a lot of colorful language! It was a personal challenge to see if I could make people laugh with genuinely funny material, not just shock value.
Carr explained he aimed to reflect his working-class background in his show, Changing Ends, drawing inspiration from the realistic and relatable humor of shows like Only Fools and Horses and Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights.
Looking back at the places he grew up, he remembers them as slightly rundown spots – like caravan parks and local, lower-league football grounds. But despite their appearance, he says that’s where real life and interesting people were to be found.

Although Carr doesn’t seem to be planning another sitcom after his current show, Changing Ends, finishes, he clearly loves the comedy genre, especially The Golden Girls, which he considers one of his favorites.
I heard this funny story about Nick Grimshaw – apparently, Amanda Holden, who’s good friends with him and works with him on a BBC home makeover show, got him Golden Girls coasters for Christmas! Seriously, how perfect is that? If you want to see those two together, they did a really fun interview as part of the ‘Two’s Company’ series on TopMob – definitely worth checking out.
Changing Ends is available to stream on ITVX.
