Alden Ehrenreich’s Beautiful Creatures Finds Redemption on Free Streaming 15 Years Later

He’s known for his roles in popular movies like Oppenheimer (2023), Weapons (2025), and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). However, earlier in his career, he appeared in the lesser-known gothic fantasy film Beautiful Creatures.

The film was released in 2013, following the actor’s first roles in Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro (2009) and Twixt (2011), and a brief, uncredited appearance in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere (2010). While Beautiful Creatures featured a notable cast, it wasn’t successful with critics or at the box office. However, according to FlixPatrol, the film has found a new audience and is now performing well on Tubi, 13 years after its initial release.

The gothic fantasy film reappeared on the charts on April 24th, landing at number four, and it stayed there for two days. It’s now performing similarly to the crime drama Four Brothers starring Mark Wahlberg.

What Is Beautiful Creatures?

Following the success of Harry Potter and Twilight, the early 2010s saw a surge in movies based on young adult novels. While many of these adaptations didn’t quite make a splash, some, despite having dedicated fan bases, struggled to succeed. Beautiful Creatures is one example of a film that faced this challenge.

This fantasy movie is adapted from the 2009 young adult novel of the same title, written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The novel started the Caster Chronicles series, and three more books in the series were published before the movie was released.

Okay, so the movie centers around this guy, Ethan Wate, who gets totally captivated by this girl, Lena Duchannes, even before she actually arrives in town. She’s new to his school when they’re both juniors, and right away everyone’s talking about her. It turns out she’s related to this really powerful, well-known guy in town, Macon Ravenwood, which just adds to the mystery.

Their love story is doomed from the start. He finds out she belongs to a hidden society of magic users known as Casters, and Lena must choose between using her powers for good (as a Light Caster) or evil (as a Dark Caster).

The movie Beautiful Creatures featured a talented cast, including Alice Englert (known from The Power of the Dog) as Lena, alongside Jeremy Irons as Macon Ravenwood, Viola Davis as Amma, Emmy Rossum as Ridley Duchannes, Thomas Mann as Link, Emma Thompson as Sarafine Duchannes, and Zoey Deutch as Emily Asher.

Beautiful Creatures Had a Negative Reception

Even with a complex story, a popular book series, and a well-known cast, the movie Beautiful Creatures didn’t do well. Critics gave it a low score of 47% based on 180 reviews, describing it as a slow and simplified adaptation of the young adult novel, likely aimed at fans of the Twilight series. Audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a negative score of 54%.

Despite a sizable $60 million budget, the film Beautiful Creatures only earned back roughly the same amount in theaters, with most of its revenue coming from overseas. While it had the potential to launch a series of films, a sequel was never made.

Beautiful Creatures is streaming on Tubi.
