Before creating The Boys, Eric Kripke was the showrunner for the first five seasons of Supernatural, and many of the same actors appear in both shows. Kripke clearly likes to work with familiar faces – a total of 12 actors from Supernatural have also been in The Boys. While The Boys isn’t heavily based on Supernatural, it does include a few references to the earlier series.
A recent example of this trend is the reunion of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins in The Boys Season 5. But the connections to Kripke’s earlier show, Supernatural, go beyond that – there are smaller references throughout The Boys, like the casting of Jim Beaver as Robert Singer (who even uses the familiar term “idjit” in Season 4). Kripke has also brought on several other actors from Supernatural, some of whom fans will recognize immediately. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first five episodes of The Boys Season 5.
13) Rob Benedict as Splinter
Played Chuck/God in Supernatural

Rob Benedict is memorable as Chuck (also known as God) in Supernatural, and even his smaller role in The Boys makes an impact. In Season 4 of The Boys, he plays Splinter, a supe with the ability to clone himself, who is friends with Firecracker and works as a political commentator. Despite his powers, he’s quickly defeated by Butcher and The Boys. While it’s a brief appearance for the Supernatural actor, it showcases a different side of Benedict’s talent and is sure to amuse fans who recognize him as Chuck.
12) Christian Keyes as Nathan Franklin
Played Michael in Supernatural

Nathan, A-Train’s brother, plays a significant role in his storyline throughout The Boys. The actor who plays him, Christian Keyes, is also known for his work on Supernatural, where he played the archangel Michael (possessing a human body). On Supernatural, Keyes was a villain who came from another universe to try and take over the Winchesters’ world. But in The Boys, he’s portrayed as a more grounded character, acting as a source of conscience for his troubled brother – a complete contrast to the powerful, supernatural enemy he played on the CW series.
11) Lesley Nicol as Connie Butcher
Played Katja in Supernatural

Billy Butcher’s upbringing significantly shapes who he is, and we get a glimpse of his mother, Connie Butcher, in Season 2, Episode 7 of The Boys, portrayed by Lesley Nichol, who also appeared in Supernatural. Interestingly, she had a brief role on Supernatural as the villain Katja. While Katja was a harsh and manipulative character who kidnapped and harmed others, Connie Butcher is portrayed as more subdued. She tries to help Billy reconcile with his father, though she doesn’t succeed. It seems she has a warmer relationship with Billy than his father does.
10) Alvina August as Monique Milk
Played Tasha in Supernatural

As a fan of The Boys, I’ve always been fascinated by Mother’s Milk’s story. His biggest drive is protecting his family – his wife and daughter – and it’s interesting that the role of his wife, Monique, was played by two different actresses! Alvina August played her in the first season, and she actually has a connection to another show I love, Supernatural. She was in one episode – Season 12, Episode 20 – and played a witch, though a much kinder one than some others we’ve seen! Later, Frances Turner took over the role, but it was cool to see Alvina get a bigger part in The Boys, really showing the fallout from Mother’s Milk’s life with the team.
9) Adrian Holmes as Dr. Park
Played a Demon & James Turner in Supernatural

You know, I’ve been spotting Adrian Holmes in a bunch of shows lately! He’s one of those actors who elevates everything he’s in. I first noticed him in Supernatural – he actually played two different characters! He was a demon way back in Season 3, and then popped up as James Turner in Season 13. But he really caught my eye in The Boys. In Season 2, he’s Dr. Park, one of Vought’s scientists. He’s assigned to watch over Becca and Ryan, and while his role seems small, he’s definitely intriguing.
8) Isaiah Adam as Lance Corporal Dan Miller
Played a Forensic Technician in Supernatural

Isaiah Adam has appeared in both The Boys and Supernatural, though his roles were relatively minor. In The Boys, he played Lance Corporal Dan Miller, appearing briefly in the first episode of Season 2 as part of a promotional video with Homelander and Queen Maeve. He’s a small part, easily overshadowed by the main characters. In Supernatural, he played an unnamed forensic technician who briefly interacts with Dean in Season 7.
7) Kai Bradbury as Young Kenji Miyashiro
Played a Clerk in Supernatural

I’ve been noticing Kai Bradbury in a few things lately, and it’s interesting to look back at his early roles. He wasn’t even credited with a character name when he was on Supernatural Season 13 – he just played a clerk, so you could easily miss him. His part in The Boys wasn’t much larger; he was a younger version of a supporting character and only appeared in one episode. He played Kimiko’s brother in Season 1, Episode 6, but the older version of the character is played by Abraham Lim.
6) Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir 2
Played Kelvin in Supernatural

In the final moments of Season 3 of The Boys, Homelander kills Black Noir, and a new character takes his place, wearing the same suit. This new version of Black Noir, played by Nathan Mitchell, is more talkative and has a stronger personality than the original – and we see him without his mask much more often. Before joining The Seven, Mitchell appeared in two episodes of Supernatural as the angel Kelvin, briefly assisting Castiel. While his Supernatural role wasn’t as large as his part in The Boys, both appearances were notable.
5) Jim Beaver as Robert Singer
Played Bobby Singer in Supernatural

Jim Beaver’s role in The Boys is a clever nod to his work on Supernatural. He plays Robert Singer, a politician nicknamed “Dakota Bob,” whose name is very similar to his Supernatural character, Bobby Singer. In The Boys, Dakota Bob opposes the superhero group and is ultimately imprisoned after being connected to a plot against Victoria Neuman. While Bobby Singer in Supernatural meets an unfortunate end as well, he’s a much-loved character – a father figure and close friend to Sam and Dean Winchester. It’s a shame Beaver doesn’t share any scenes with the Supernatural actors in The Boys, although he does subtly reference his earlier role a couple of times.
4) Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy
Played Dean Winchester in Supernatural

Jensen Ackles has stood out in both Supernatural and The Boys, despite playing vastly different roles. In Supernatural, he’s Dean Winchester, the older brother known for his wit, love of pie, and skills as a hunter, always fiercely protecting his family. His character in The Boys, Soldier Boy, is a far cry from heroic. While he still delivers sarcastic lines and commands attention in every scene, Soldier Boy is one of the first superheroes created through Compound V – and his genetic material was used to create Homelander. Ackles will continue to be a major part of The Boys world, with a spin-off series, Vought Rising, scheduled for release in 2027.
3) Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Joe Kessler
Played John Winchester in Supernatural

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is known for playing complex and captivating characters, and his roles in both Supernatural and The Boys showcase this talent. He played John Winchester, the father of Sam and Dean, in Supernatural, and a similar-sized supporting role as Joe Kessler in Season 4 of The Boys – one of Butcher’s war buddies. However, The Boys dramatically changes our understanding of Kessler’s character by the season’s end. Like John Winchester, Kessler is morally ambiguous, and Morgan consistently brings a magnetic quality to these kinds of roles, making him a great fit for both shows.
2) Misha Collins as Malchemical
Played Castiel in Supernatural

Misha Collins, known for his role as Castiel on Supernatural, will be appearing in Season 5 of The Boys. This brings together cast members from the original Supernatural series. Collins plays Malchemical, a character with the power to release poisonous gas, and he briefly manages to subdue Homelander with it. Unfortunately, Soldier Boy quickly kills him off, but his appearance is still a fun surprise. It’s a humorous twist considering the close, friendly relationship between his character Castiel and Sam and Dean in Supernatural – a dynamic that’s flipped completely in The Boys.
1) Jared Padalecki as Mister Marathon
Played Sam Winchester in Supernatural

Jared Padalecki joins Season 5 of The Boys in Episode 5, playing the character Mister Marathon. He’s a former member of The Seven, known for his super speed, who was replaced by A-Train when he lost his edge. Homelander and Soldier Boy track him down hoping to learn about V1, but the encounter quickly turns violent and ends with Mister Marathon’s death. This isn’t the first time Padalecki’s character has died in a show created by Eric Kripke; he also plays Sam Winchester in Supernatural. While Sam faces death often in that series, his death at the hands of Jensen Ackles’ character is particularly impactful.
