Sci-fi reboots often do surprisingly well, sometimes even surpassing the original series, as seen with the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. However, not all attempts succeed. Some, like the 2007 Bionic Woman, just don’t work, while others are cut short before they can really find their footing. Now, a promising reboot that was cancelled prematurely – all 22 episodes are available to stream for free – is getting a second look, and many still wish it had been allowed to finish its story.
You can now watch V for free on Tubi. This 2009 series is a remake of the classic 1983 miniseries with the same name, and it largely retells the original story: aliens arrive on Earth pretending to be friendly and offering advanced technology and medical help. But beneath the surface, they have dangerous plans. While the remake stays true to the original’s core idea, it’s generally darker and explores different themes, particularly how easily people will trust a charming leader – in this case, the alien leader, Anna. The show ran for two seasons on ABC, ending on a cliffhanger with humanity facing a bleak future. Unfortunately, the network cancelled it abruptly, leaving fans to wonder what would have happened next.
V Left Viewers In Dark Territory (And We Still Want a Proper Finale)
The core of the story in V revolves around the Visitors and their leader, Anna, who pretend to come in peace but actually have a hidden agenda. They offer humanity technological and medical progress in exchange for Earth’s resources, but not everyone believes their promises. FBI agent Erica Evans quickly discovers the truth: the Visitors are reptilian aliens with a long-term plan to conquer the planet. A human resistance rises up, but the Visitors consistently stay ahead. By the end of the second season, the Visitors succeed – Anna uses her telepathic power, Bliss, to brainwash everyone on Earth just as more of their ships arrive, effectively winning the conflict.
Although the show seemingly ended on that note, the cancellation actually sparked a fan-led effort to revive it. This campaign, known as “Project Alice,” involved fans writing letters to Warner Bros., hoping they would move the series to another network. They explored options with TNT and The CW, but ultimately, the campaign wasn’t successful, leaving Earth and humanity facing a grim fate.
Beyond its unfortunate cancellation and the dedicated efforts of its fans, the show V is interesting because the ending—where the aliens essentially win—isn’t necessarily a negative one. We still wished for a complete story, as the original V miniseries also didn’t get a proper conclusion after being cut short by NBC. However, the remake made it surprisingly compelling to side with the aliens. Morena Baccarin’s portrayal of Anna is both chilling and captivating; even knowing she’s a villain, you find yourself wanting to see her succeed. This plays into the show’s themes about being drawn to charismatic evil, but it’s also a testament to Baccarin’s incredible performance – arguably her best yet. While it would have been great to see the story continue, the Visitor’s victory is strangely satisfying. You can experience the series for yourself by streaming it for free on Tubi.
