All 6 Earthrealm Warriors In Mortal Kombat 2, Ranked by Power

The movie immerses viewers in the world of the classic video game, centering around a massive tournament with the future of Earth at stake. To prevent an invasion by the villainous Shao Khan and his army, Earth’s heroes must unite and defeat their rivals for good.

Earthrealm’s defenders include classic heroes from the original games, characters featured in the 2021 movie, and newcomer Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Though each hero has their own strengths, some are noticeably more powerful than others—at least based on how they appear in Mortal Kombat II.

Jax Briggs Manages To Keep Up With the Other Earthrealm Heroes

Mechad Brooks returns as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, a former Special Forces Major who was also in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie. In the first film, Jax loses his arms in a fight with Sub-Zero. But when he activates a special power, he gains incredible strength and develops large, robotic arms that make him a powerful fighter.

Jax is a powerful fighter who relies on his strength, and it helps him win many battles – he even defeats Jade in the Mortal Kombat II tournament. But he discovers that strength isn’t enough when Shao Khan defeats him. Despite being very strong, Jax isn’t one of Earthrealm’s most powerful heroes.

Johnny Cage Is Still Growing Into His Role as a Hero

Karl Urban is joining the Mortal Kombat series in the upcoming sequel, playing the popular character Johnny Cage. Once a major action star, similar to Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal, Johnny Cage’s career has stalled by the time of Mortal Kombat II. Despite this, he’s unexpectedly recruited to fight for Earthrealm, pushing him to rediscover his action hero skills.

Okay, so Johnny Cage? I see the potential, seriously. He’s still pretty green when it comes to actually defending Earthrealm, though. It’s like, he just figured out how to use his special moves at the end of Mortal Kombat II, and he’s nowhere near mastering them yet. I’m really hoping they give him a big power boost in a future game, because right now, he’s just… not quite up there with the top-tier fighters. He’s definitely in the lower ranks, but I think he could really climb if they develop his powers more.

Sub-Zero Is Back and Ready for Revenge in Mortal Kombat II

In Mortal Kombat II, Sub-Zero—a classic enemy from the series—returns for another battle against Scorpion. Though he died in the first movie, Sub-Zero comes back as a ghost in the Netherworld and obtains an amulet that’s key to defeating Shao Khan.

As a huge fan of the Mortal Kombat films, I was really impressed with Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat II. He’s clearly leveled up, showing off this awesome ability to create multiple shadow clones – it makes him a seriously formidable opponent! Sadly, he still meets his end, but honestly, I don’t think that’s the last we’ll see of him. If he’s ever going to get the upper hand on Scorpion, though, he’s going to need to bring some even more powerful skills to the table next time.

Kung Lao Returns From the Dead With a Different Perspective

Okay, so here’s a weird one. Remember Kung Lao? Yeah, the guy who died in the first Mortal Kombat film? Well, he’s back in Mortal Kombat II, and it’s…complicated. Turns out Shao Khan had Quan Chi dig him up using some seriously shady magic. Now, this isn’t the heroic Kung Lao we knew; Quan Chi has corrupted him, turning one of Earthrealm’s former protectors into a villain fighting for the bad guys. It’s a pretty dark twist to see such a noble character fall from grace.

Despite dying and coming back to life, Kung Lao remains a formidable fighter, though he does have limitations. When he fights his cousin, Liu Kang, it’s clear Liu Kang is the stronger of the two. Liu Kang tries his best not to kill a family member he cares about, but ultimately realizes Kung Lao is beyond help—at least for now. As a result, Kung Lao dies once again.

Liu Kang Is One of Earthrealm’s Most Powerful Warriors

Liu Kang is a key hero in the world of Mortal Kombat, known for being one of Earthrealm’s strongest fighters. Actor Ludi Lin portrays him as he returns to compete in the tournament against Shao Khan’s army. Liu Kang combines powerful fire blasts with his already impressive martial arts skills.

Liu Kang earns Earthrealm an early victory in the tournament against Shao Khan when he is forced to fight his resurrected cousin, Kung Lao. Although the two are equally skilled, Liu Kang’s powers are simply greater than those of his brother-in-arms, and he wins in the end. However, Liu Kang’s story doesn’t end there.

At the end of Mortal Kombat II, Liu Kang is seriously injured while battling Shao Khan. This injury makes him understand he has a greater purpose beyond the current fight. Instead of succumbing to his wounds like a typical warrior, he rises to the afterlife, searching for Kung Lao. It becomes clear that Liu Kang possesses more power than previously shown in the first Mortal Kombat film, and fans are eager to see how his abilities develop in Mortal Kombat III.

Raiden Is the Most Powerful Defender of Earthrealm

Tadanobu Asano is back as Lord Raiden in Mortal Kombat II, playing the god of thunder who dedicates himself to defending Earthrealm. Now older and wiser, Raiden trains the world’s best fighters, helping them become their strongest selves so they can battle against evil.

Lord Raiden is a powerful warrior, known for controlling lightning and thunder. He uses these powers alongside his impressive martial arts skills to win fights. He’s also a teacher, sharing his expertise with students like Kung Lao and Liu Kang.

In Mortal Kombat II, Lord Raiden is seriously injured early on by a surprise attack from Shao Kahn’s army, leaving him largely out of action for much of the game. However, this actually highlights his strength – Shao Kahn realized that taking out Raiden was key to conquering Earthrealm. He knew that if Raiden lived, he would ultimately defeat them. As it turns out, Shao Kahn was right; despite his injuries, Raiden recovers and guides Earthrealm’s heroes to victory.

Though Mortal Kombat II has a large roster of powerful characters, only a few truly stand out as the best. While fighters like Cole Young and Mileena are capable, six warriors are exceptional defenders of their realms – and they’re the most likely heroes to lead a potential third Mortal Kombat movie.

Mortal Kombat II is now available to buy on PVOD.
