While Darth Vader is arguably the most famous character in Star Wars, Lucasfilm has been careful not to use him too much. This is because his presence automatically raises the tension – as the Chosen One, very few Jedi should be able to defeat him. And for anyone without Force powers, he’s nearly unstoppable, as demonstrated by his memorable appearance in Rogue One.
It’s amazing to me, but Darth Vader has only really had nine full lightsaber fights across all the Star Wars movies and shows! And it makes sense – most of the times someone survives a duel with him, it’s because they’re one of the main heroes. I’ve been thinking a lot about these fights, and I’m ranking them based on how well they were choreographed, how skilled Vader was in each one, and just how exciting the whole duel was.
9. Obi-Wan Kenobi: Darth Vader Versus Obi-Wan Kenobi
The series Obi-Wan Kenobi features two lightsaber fights between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan. The first isn’t much of a fight at all – Vader doesn’t want to simply best Obi-Wan, he wants to completely overpower him. He uses his immense Force abilities to break through Obi-Wan’s defenses and inflict pain, essentially torturing him. While it’s not a traditional duel, making it less impressive than others, it’s still a powerful and memorable scene.
8. Star Wars Rebels: Darth Vader Versus Ezra and Kanan
Star Wars animated series often emphasize how intimidating and powerful Darth Vader is. A great example is Star Wars Rebels, where characters like Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger fight him and barely survive. Kanan hadn’t received proper Jedi training since escaping the Order 66 purge, and neither he nor his apprentice were strong enough to defeat Vader. Vader easily defeats Kanan, almost kills Ezra using his own lightsaber, and is only stopped when the rest of the rebel team intervenes.
7. Star Wars: Darth Vader Versus Obi-Wan Kenobi
The very first lightsaber battle in Star Wars isn’t actually the most polished or exciting to watch. However, it has a gritty, physical energy that many later duels lack. Obi-Wan and Darth Vader really seem to be wrestling with each other, using their strength and weight alongside their weapons – you can see the beginnings of everything lightsaber combat would become. What’s always struck me is that this initial duel isn’t about winning; it’s a clever tactic by Obi-Wan to create a diversion so Luke, Leia, and Han can escape.
6. Obi-Wan Kenobi: Darth Vader Versus Obi-Wan (Episode 6)
As a fan, I have really mixed feelings about Obi-Wan Kenobi. The final fight is beautifully choreographed, and seeing it at Star Wars Celebration on a big screen in the dark finally let me truly appreciate it! Honestly, the TV show’s lighting made it so hard to follow what was happening during the duel. But, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen? They were incredible. Their performance made it one of the most amazing lightsaber fights I’ve ever seen in Star Wars – it’s just a shame the show didn’t quite deliver the visuals it deserved.
5. Star Wars Rebels: Darth Vader Versus Ahsoka Tano
It was inevitable that Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice would return in Star Wars Rebels, and fans predicted it would lead to a confrontation between Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano. Their epic duel took place on the volcanic planet Mustafar, and it’s a stunning, expertly-crafted fight that feels as emotionally charged as Vader’s battle with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith. Surprisingly, Vader seems almost indifferent to Ahsoka at this point, even stopping the fight because he has other priorities. Ahsoka would have been killed if Ezra hadn’t intervened using the power of the World Between Worlds.
4. The Empire Strikes Back: Darth Vader Versus Luke Skywalker

The first fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker is iconic. Initially, Vader lets Luke attack, easily blocking his moves without putting in much effort. He only starts fighting seriously when Luke escapes the carbonite freezing trap, revealing Vader’s willingness to cheat to win. For Vader, it’s not about winning a lightsaber duel – he wants to crush his enemies with the power of the dark side. With Luke, he uses telekinesis to effortlessly defeat him, demonstrating just how much stronger he is than Luke ever thought possible.
3. Maul – Shadow Lord: Obi-Wan Kenobi Versus Darth Maul

The culmination of Maul – Shadow Lord delivers the Darth Vader versus Darth Maul fight I’ve waited nearly three decades to see. It exceeded all expectations, featuring breathtaking fight scenes that perfectly showcase why Palpatine favored Anakin Skywalker as the Chosen One. The battle isn’t just Vader against Maul; he also faces Maul’s apprentice, Devon Izara, and Master Eeko-Dio Daki, who temporarily join forces against him. This three-on-one situation allows for some of the most impressive choreography yet, with Vader easily overpowering his opponents.
2. Return of the Jedi: Darth Vader Vs. Luke Skywalker (Round Two)

The second duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader is quite different from their first encounter. Instead of immediately fighting physically, they initially engage in a battle of wills, each trying to sway the other philosophically and control the situation. The conflict truly escalates when Vader threatens those Luke cares about, causing Luke to react with anger. Finally, Vader finds his equal – Luke momentarily gives in to his darker impulses and overpowers Vader with the same aggressive force typically seen from the Sith. This unexpected turn of events leads to a victorious moment for Luke.
1. Revenge of the Sith: Darth Vader Versus Obi-Wan Kenobi

The best lightsaber fight in Star Wars history has to be Anakin Skywalker against Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith. Even though Anakin isn’t fully Darth Vader yet, he’s already embraced that identity, making this duel significant. The choreography is incredible, with Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor both showing off their skills. It’s a truly stunning scene – one that will likely never be topped. What makes it so powerful is the personal connection; these aren’t just enemies fighting, but two brothers battling to the death. It’s pure cinematic artistry.
