All 9 Demon Slayer Hashira Ranked By Their Survival Instincts

What truly sets a Hashira apart in *Demon Slayer* isn’t just their fighting skills, breathing styles, or strength – it’s their will to survive. Being the strongest or killing the most demons isn’t what makes them elite. It’s a fundamental, often-missed quality: a powerful, ingrained instinct for survival. What matters most is how they make decisions, their automatic reactions, and the inner drive that keeps them fighting, no matter how skilled they are.

Honestly, what I find so fascinating about the Hashira is how they each cope with life – and survival – in such different ways. It’s like their past experiences and how they see the world really shape everything they do. You can really see their personal philosophies at work, and it’s incredibly complex and moving to watch.

Please be aware that the following information contains major spoilers for both the Demon Slayer manga and the recent Infinity Castle movie.

9. Giyuu Tomioka

Giyuu Tomioka is likely the Hashira with the weakest survival instincts, not because of a lack of skill, but due to overwhelming guilt over surviving when others didn’t. He’s a reserved fighter who secretly feels unworthy of life, haunted by the memory of his friend Sabito’s sacrifice during the Final Selection. He believes he only achieved the rank of Hashira because Sabito died protecting him, and this belief diminishes his desire to live, making survival feel like a heavy obligation rather than a natural drive.

He frequently behaves recklessly, almost inviting danger. However, this isn’t necessarily courage born from a strong will to live; it often stems from a lack of concern for his own life. While his skills and mastery of Water Breathing keep him from dying, he’s mentally on the verge of giving up, a stark contrast to the unwavering determination to survive expected of a Hashira.

8. Mitsuri Kanroji

Mitsuri is incredibly strong and flexible, comparable to the most powerful Demon Slayers. However, her strong desire for love and acceptance sometimes gets in the way of her instincts. This longing for connection can distract her and make her vulnerable, clouding her judgment in dangerous fights and causing her to prioritize being liked over her own safety.

She has a cheerful and hopeful nature, which isn’t always helpful in the dangerous world of *Demon Slayer*. Though a skilled fighter, her tendency to see the best in things, and especially her strong feelings for Iguro, sometimes cloud her judgment. This makes her less focused on pure survival than the other Hashira when dealing with powerful enemies like the Upper Moons.

7. Shinobu Kocho

When Shinobu’s sister, Kanae, was killed by the powerful demon Doma, it completely broke Shinobu’s spirit. She lost her desire to live and became consumed by a single goal: revenge. She felt she was living on borrowed time, and everything she did was focused on getting justice for her sister by defeating the demon who had taken her life.

I watched as she deliberately set aside any thought of saving herself. She meticulously planned to use her knowledge of poisons, and the plan required a terrible sacrifice: she would have to be consumed by Doma, allowing the poison within her to kill him. It became clear this wasn’t about her own survival at all. She wasn’t trying to live; she was focused entirely on achieving one deadly outcome, and she was willing to pay any price to get there. Living, for her, was simply a way to accomplish that goal.

6. Muichiro Tokito

Before Muichiro remembered his past, he relied on instinct to survive. His incredible skills as a Hashira came naturally, but weren’t fueled by a conscious desire to live – he’d lost those memories already. The terrible trauma of witnessing his twin brother’s death and nearly being killed himself was deeply buried, a way for his brain to shield him from overwhelming pain. Had he remembered that horrific event when Amane Ubuyashiki found him, his reactions would have been quicker and more focused, sharpened by the experience.

When Tanjiro reminded him of his past, a strong new motivation took hold. Remembering his twin brother and the pain of being separated fueled a fresh commitment to protecting both others and himself. However, because he hadn’t developed his skills and memories from the start of his time as a Hashira, his initial instincts for survival were more reliant on natural ability than on the years of training the other Hashira had received.

5. Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei, one of the most powerful Demon Slayers known as the Stone Hashira, is likely the strongest of them all, possessing incredible skill and physical strength. However, his peaceful, monk-like personality sometimes hinders his survival instincts. He carries deep regret over a past event where he was wrongly blamed for murders committed by a demon, and surprisingly, he chose to accept imprisonment instead of defending himself. This willingness to passively accept injustice reveals a vulnerability beneath his otherwise unbreakable spirit.

He’s a naturally kind and caring person, which is rare and valuable among the Hashira, who constantly face death. However, in such a harsh world, his gentle nature can be a weakness. Though he can fight fiercely and will do anything to defeat Muzan, he’s usually peaceful and thoughtful. This can sometimes make him hesitate when quick, instinctive action is needed, leaving him a bit slower to react than those who are naturally more aggressive.

4. Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro Rengoku had amazing instincts, allowing him to fight for survival even when defeat seemed certain. For instance, when put to sleep by a demon’s power on the Mugen Train, his body continued to defend him and the other passengers, acting purely on instinct while his mind was trapped in a dream.

It’s incredible to me how he could still fight, even when he wasn’t thinking clearly. It really shows just how deeply ingrained his will to survive was – it was pure instinct! All that training he went through meant his reactions were lightning-fast, whether he was consciously thinking or not. And even at the very end, he was still focused on protecting others and refusing to give up, which is the ultimate proof of his incredible, unwavering survival instinct.

3. Iguro Obanai

Iguro Obanai possesses incredibly strong survival instincts, likely developed from a brutal childhood. He suffered terrible abuse from his family and was haunted by a terrifying demon. No one else could have survived twelve years of being physically harmed and imprisoned, but his determination to live drove him to escape, even if it meant painstakingly breaking out of his wooden cage in secret.

Let me tell you, what this person went through completely shaped who they are today. It made them incredibly sharp, always thinking several steps ahead, but also deeply cautious – they don’t trust easily, and honestly, it’s hard to blame them given what they’ve endured. It’s like they’re always ‘on,’ always scanning for danger. This isn’t a flaw, though – it’s what makes them such a formidable fighter and a fiercely protective person. They’ll do absolutely anything for the people they love, and their survival instincts are just always firing on all cylinders. It’s a tough way to live, but it’s made them incredibly resilient.

2. Sanemi Shinazugawa

I’ve always noticed a fierce, almost primal anger driving Sanemi, and it seems to stem from a horrific childhood experience. When he was young, he fought off a demon that was attacking his siblings, and the worst part was realizing that demon was actually their mother. Despite the unimaginable trauma, he was determined to live and protect his little brother, Genya. That instinctive, desperate fight against his own mother-now a monster-really shows just how strong his will to survive is.

That same fiery determination and unwillingness to quit continue to define him as an adult, with both positive and negative consequences. He’s obsessed with eliminating demons – a laser-like focus that makes him incredibly powerful. In battle, he’s utterly merciless, with no time for compassion. This unwavering dedication and rage are what drive his incredible survival skills, making him a Hashira that no demon would ever want to face.

1. Tengen Uzui

Honestly, Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, is just incredible when it comes to sheer survival skills – he’s definitely number one in my book! His fight against Daki and Gyutaro was absolutely brutal; he lost an eye and a hand, and nearly died countless times. It completely leveled the whole Entertainment District! But the moment it was over, he made this really powerful decision: he decided to retire. It just shows how strong-willed he is, even after everything he went through.

Tengen, a pragmatic and focused former ninja, understood his limitations. He realized he couldn’t defeat the strongest demons alone – he needed help even with Upper Six. Choosing to live a full life with his wives, rather than face certain death in a futile battle, was a powerful display of self-preservation. This decision, prioritizing his and his wives’ lives over a warrior’s honor, represents the strongest survival instinct of any of the Hashira.
