All of Absolute Batman’s Villains, Ranked by Terror

Batman is known for having incredibly memorable villains. Characters like the Joker, Catwoman, and Two-Face are so famous that even people who don’t follow Batman comics recognize them. These villains have had a huge impact on the comic book world, with several even getting their own series. A hero is often defined by their villains, and while Batman is already a fantastic hero, his iconic enemies definitely contribute to his success.

The Absolute Universe takes familiar characters and reimagines them with fresh designs and more complex, often darker, reasons for their actions. We’ve already seen this with Absolute Batman, which has introduced many of Batman’s classic villains. Some have surprisingly become his allies, while others are even more frightening than before. It feels like Bruce Wayne faces a new terrifying threat every week, and that’s what we’ll be exploring today. We’re going to rank all the villains introduced in this universe, from least to most terrifying. Prepare for a genuinely scary list – I can’t wait to get started!

8) The Robins

The Robins are at the bottom of this ranking, and surprisingly, they aren’t intimidating. Despite being incredibly skilled warriors with impressive, high-tech suits—suits I secretly hope can combine into a giant robot—they’re designed to inspire hope, not fear. They even see themselves as the heroes, tasked with stopping the often-villainous Batman. Their bright green and red outfits, and even their mechs, prioritize a cool look over a frightening one. While the Robins aren’t scary, they’re unique in that regard – everyone else on this list is.

7) Black Mask

Black Mask stays truest to his roots. While his new mask is more disturbing and he appears more unstable, he’s fundamentally a wealthy gangster – a common type of foe for Batman. He was defeated like any other criminal, and arguably, the original Black Mask is more unsettling. The classic version has a unique kind of madness, whereas this new iteration felt strangely calm, even while acting completely insane. Ultimately, he’s a fairly standard villain.

6) Deathstroke

Absolute Deathstroke is a truly frightening villain, even with the limited appearances he’s made so far. As the Joker’s top assassin, he’s even more dangerous than someone like Bane. What’s most unsettling is his relentless drive – he’s suffered horrific injuries, losing limbs and part of his face, yet he continues to operate as a brutal force. He just doesn’t give up, and his future fights with Batman are bound to be incredibly intense. He has the potential to become a major threat, but for now, his current position in the hierarchy feels right.

5) Bane

Bane was unlike any villain Batman had faced before. Even before the venom, he was incredibly strong and skilled in combat, but after injecting it, he became a truly terrifying monster. That reveal was genuinely shocking – it hadn’t felt like a comic book had that impact in years. Bane proved he wasn’t just brute force; he was also a clever strategist, always seeming to be in control. He’s disturbing because he combines brutal violence with a calm, almost rational demeanor. Bane is a chilling mix of pain and quiet terror, and he’ll continue to be a major psychological challenge for Batman.

4) Poison Ivy

The creative team intentionally misled readers with Ivy’s introduction. At first, she appeared to be a familiar version of the character, but the reveal showed her as a terrifying monster built from the building blocks of all life. She’s a disturbingly large and deformed creature covered in extra eyes, limbs, and flowers – truly resembling a Lovecraftian horror, and it’s both amazing and frightening. While Ivy is visually the most frightening villain we’ve seen, her tragic backstory and underlying humanity prevent her from being the most terrifying. This is because the other villains feel monstrous all the way through, without any redeeming qualities.

3) Mister Freeze

Mister Freeze was once one of Batman’s most pitiable enemies, but the new ‘Absolute’ version is genuinely frightening. Years spent encased in ice have changed him into a tall, blue-skinned creature with the power to instantly freeze anything he touches. While he still appears somewhat human, which is unsettling, it’s his motivations that are truly terrifying. He’s consumed by a desire to trap others in ice, forcing them to feel the pain he once endured. Every interaction with him hints at the human being that died within his frozen heart. Seeing Mister Freeze is a reminder of something once human, now lost and unrecognizable.

2) Joker

I haven’t been genuinely frightened by the Joker in years, but this new take is truly terrifying. Snyder has reinvented him, drawing inspiration from the creepy Pale Man he created in his 2011 Batman comics. This Joker isn’t just a villain; he’s an ancient, demonic being who’s been disguising himself as his own family line for centuries. He appears to be a generous benefactor, but secretly orchestrates pain and misery just for his own amusement. It’s shockingly disturbing – he even sustains his immortality by taking the blood of orphaned children. Those scenes are some of the most horrifying I’ve ever seen in a comic. What makes it even worse is understanding that his only motivation is to cause suffering and hear people’s anguish – it’s all a twisted game to him.

1) Scarecrow

The Absoltue Scarecrow hasn’t been around for very long, but he’s quickly become a memorable and terrifying villain. His design is deeply unsettling – he has button eyes, a sewn-shut mouth, and a disturbingly twisted smile. He moves with an unnatural calmness while manipulating others into committing terrible acts. The Absoltue Scarecrow is dread itself, and he relishes making everyone around him feel the fear he enjoys. He feels both ghostly and painfully human, a combination that makes him genuinely frightening whenever he appears.
