Bruce Wayne, the man behind Batman, has retired from the role several times throughout DC Comics history, and each time someone else has taken up the mantle of the Caped Crusader. The reasons for his departures have been varied – from serious injuries inflicted by villains like Bane, to apparent death during battles with powerful foes like Darkseid, and even choosing to step away and believing his time as Batman was over. These replacements have happened both within the main DC timeline and in stories set in the future, including one taking place a hundred years after Wayne’s death.
Whether chosen by Batman himself or stepping up when they felt ready, many heroes have taken on the role of Batman. Here’s a ranking of the best, based on how well they performed, their popularity, and the unique contributions they made to the Batman legacy.
10) Jean-Paul Valley

Bruce Wayne personally selected Jean-Paul Valley to temporarily take on the role of Batman after Bane severely injured him in 1993. However, Valley struggled with the pressure and began operating as a much more violent and ruthless Batman. He created a high-tech, weaponized suit called AzBats, exiled Tim Drake, and even started killing criminals, breaking Batman’s core principles. After a year, Bruce Wayne recovered and stopped Valley, who reverted to his identity as Azrael.
9) Jason Todd

After Bruce Wayne appeared to die fighting Darkseid in the Final Crisis, Jason Todd briefly became Batman in the 2009 storyline, “Battle for the Cowl.” Several former Robins competed to become the new Batman, but Jason was the least prepared. He dramatically altered the Batsuit with a red and black design and, unlike Bruce, started using guns, quickly demonstrating he wasn’t the right choice. When Jason began killing criminals while acting as Batman, Dick Grayson stepped in to stop him and take on the mantle himself.
8) Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred Pennyworth is a surprising, yet capable, Batman stand-in. He wasn’t originally intended to be Batman, but has convincingly filled the role as a decoy several times, going all the way back to the 1960s TV series. His background in British intelligence and as a medic gave him the skills needed to pull it off. He even donned the Batman suit in an alternate universe (Earth-2). While he usually steps back from the role quickly, Alfred proves he’s more than capable of being Batman.
7) Jim Gordon

At the end of the 2015 comic “Endgame,” it appeared Batman had died. In response, the government decided to create their own version of the hero, choosing Jim Gordon for the job. Since he lacked Batman’s physical abilities, Gordon used a large robotic suit called the Rookie – a mech with rabbit ears and the Gotham City Police Department’s symbol. He became the first officially authorized Batman and was effective at reducing crime. When Bruce Wayne eventually returned, he reclaimed the mantle. Gordon was a dedicated officer who bravely tried to fill an impossible role.
6) Jace Fox

Jace Fox is the son of Lucius Fox and first appeared in the 2021 series, Future State: The Next Batman. In that story, set in the near future, he became Batman’s successor and later starred in his own comic, I Am Batman. After the Future State storyline concluded, DC Comics integrated Jace into the main Batman universe. Notably, he’s the first Black character to take on the role of Batman in the main continuity, allowing for stories that explore important issues like racial bias, systemic injustice, and police misconduct. Jace operates alongside the original Batman, often working both within and outside of Gotham City.
5) Brane Taylor

Brane Taylor is a Batman who comes from a long way in the future. He first appeared in a Batman comic in 1951 as the Batman from the 31st century. This makes him one of the earliest ideas for a future Batman and one of the first characters to take on the mantle after Bruce Wayne in DC Comics, though a similar character existed from the 30th century in 1944. As a descendant of Bruce Wayne, Brane inherited the Batman role centuries after Wayne’s death. He operates in a high-tech future with advanced gadgets and a unique base called the Bat-Belfry, and even has his own Robin. Interestingly, he’s traveled back in time to team up with the original Bruce Wayne on several occasions. Though a bit of a historical oddity, Brane Taylor paved the way for all future versions of Batman.
4) Tim Drake

Similar to Jason Todd, Tim Drake became Batman’s successor during the “Battle for the Cowl” storyline in 2009. However, unlike Todd, Tim never killed anyone. He wanted to prove he was capable of being Batman, working alongside Dick Grayson. He briefly wore the Batman costume in 1994 during the “Prodigal” arc, and Bruce Wayne once considered him his official successor before discovering he had a son. Tim is known as the most intellectually gifted Batman, possessing detective skills that rival even Bruce Wayne’s. Ultimately, though, he decided Dick Grayson was better suited to the role and stepped aside.
3) Damian Wayne

Damian Wayne is arguably the most driven of all potential successors to Batman. He’s repeatedly stated he was specifically raised to take on the role, regardless of others’ opinions. As the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, he has a natural claim to the legacy. He first became Batman in a possible future depicted in Batman #666 (2007), protecting a devastated Gotham. Notably, he even made a deal with the devil to fulfill this destiny, making him the most morally complicated version of Batman. Essentially, he was biologically designed to be the next Batman.
2) Terry McGinnis

Terry McGinnis is a futuristic version of Batman who debuted in Batman Beyond. Set in the city of Neo-Gotham, the story follows Terry, a troubled teen, after Bruce Wayne has retired from being Batman. Bruce eventually takes Terry under his wing, training him to become the new Batman. Terry’s Batman suit is very different from previous versions – it’s a high-tech design with features like cloaking, flight, and enhanced strength. He officially became part of the main DC Comics universe in 2010 and gained prominence, even becoming more well-known than some characters who started in the comics, particularly during the Future State storyline.
1) Dick Grayson

Dick Grayson is widely considered the best successor to Bruce Wayne as Batman. After Wayne’s death, a competition known as “Battle for the Cowl” saw the former Robins vying to become the new Batman. Tim Drake believed Dick was the rightful heir, and ultimately, Dick defeated Jason Todd to claim the mantle. This marked the beginning of a strong partnership with Damian Wayne as Robin – a relationship many fans found more compelling than Damian’s with Bruce. As Batman, Dick Grayson excelled, even becoming a leader within the Justice League and, in some ways, surpassing Bruce Wayne’s legacy.
