All’s Fair Director Anthony Hemingway Defends Kim Kardashian-Led Show

Anthony Hemingway is calling for order in the court.

The director of All’s Fair spoke out in defense of the Hulu series, which features a star-studded cast including Kim Kardashian, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Paulson, Teyana Taylor, Glenn Close, and Naomi Watts as divorce attorneys, following criticism the show has received since it debuted on November 4th.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 48-year-old Anthony explained that you can’t expect everyone to agree. He said that while some people might criticize the show, many others will love it. He believes the show allows viewers to see themselves reflected in the story, and it ultimately comes down to whether or not they can connect with it.

He added that something might not be right for a person – it could be too challenging, or simply not something they relate to, and he believes this applies to anything you see on TV or in movies.

The new three-episode series follows Kim, Naomi, and Niecy as they launch their own law firm, run entirely by women. They specialize in divorce cases, but with a twist: instead of traditional court battles, they resolve everything within their stylish conference room, always dressed to impress. They investigate and successfully win cases all without stepping foot in a courtroom.

Despite the show’s glamorous setting, many critics didn’t like how it mixed complicated legal language with the world of high fashion. Immediately after it aired, All’s Fair received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and several reviewers called the writing incredibly boring.

Even though the show didn’t receive high ratings, Anthony—who also served as an executive producer with Ryan Murphy and Kris Jenner—recognizes that people watch entertainment and comedy in different ways.

He explained that the key is to connect with genuine human interactions and relationships in a new way. While it might not appeal to everyone, he personally finds the show enjoyable and relatable. He emphasized that not all things are universally liked, and one person’s opinion shouldn’t be considered the only valid perspective. He doesn’t believe in that kind of thinking.

The director thinks it’s normal for audiences to need time to connect with a work of art. As the show’s first season unfolds, Anthony encourages viewers to be patient and give it a chance.

Honestly, you just have to let it wash over you, you know? Don’t try to pick it apart or read too much into every little thing! He says it’s meant to feel a certain way, and it’s going to change and grow, become more… real. It’s like he’s promising it’ll become something truly human, and I just get that. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
