It’s common now for TV shows to have long breaks between seasons, especially with streaming services. Often, years can pass before a new season arrives. While some delays are expected, a gap of nearly a decade is unusual. However, Prime Video is bringing back a highly-rated show almost ten years after its initial release.
Originally airing in 2016, *The Night Manager* stars popular actor Tom Hiddleston. Based on the John le Carré novel of the same name, the series centers on Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a hotel night manager in Cairo who used to be a British soldier. He’s recruited by Angela Burr, who leads a government task force, to investigate and expose Richard Roper, a dangerous arms dealer. In April 2024, BBC One and Prime Video unexpectedly renewed the show for two more seasons, and it’s currently anticipated to return in late 2025, though an official release date hasn’t been confirmed.
Why Is There Such a Long Gap Between Seasons of The Night Manager?
When *The Night Manager* comes back, the new season will acknowledge the years that have passed since the first. The reason for this time jump is rooted in the story itself. The first season closely followed John le Carré’s novel, and because he didn’t write a sequel, seasons two and three will venture beyond the original book. Developing this new storyline took time and careful planning.
Hiddleston shared with Deadline that they were careful to ensure the story was accurate. He was especially pleased that John le Carré had initially approved of their adaptation, and they knew any future project would need to be based on a story that met the same standards.
What Will The Second Season of The Night Manager Be About?
Details about the new season are still limited, but it will be primarily filmed in Colombia. Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman will both return, reprising their roles, along with Alistair Petrie. New cast members Diego Calva and Camila Morrone have also been confirmed. While the season is heavily based in Colombia, future seasons won’t necessarily stay there, though the next location hasn’t been announced.
It will be fascinating to see how the new season of *The Night Manager* is received. The first season was a huge success, praised for its strong writing, compelling story, and Tom Hiddleston’s excellent performance. With several years having passed and the new season diverging from the original source material, expectations are high, and it remains to be seen if the show can recapture its initial success.
The second season of *The Night Manager* is still planned to premiere on Prime Video later in 2024.
