The popularity of Dungeons & Dragons continues to rise, and the digital world is a major factor. Many players now connect online to play, and podcasts have sprung up to share in the fun. Critical Role is one of the most successful, featuring voice acting professionals playing a D&D campaign. After the success of The Legend of Vox Machina on Amazon Prime Video, a new series is coming soon, and fans of The Mighty Nein are in for a special treat!
The first episode of The Mighty Nein is now available to watch for free on YouTube, but it won’t be there for long! You can stream it starting today, but only until November 16th. This new animated series takes place after The Legend of Vox Machina, though more seasons of that series are still coming. Amazon Prime Video describes the episode as follows: “After an explosion at the border threatens to start a war, Beauregard Lionett investigates and discovers a hidden, dangerous plot. At the same time, Caleb Widogast joins forces with an unexpected partner to break into a magical pet shop.”
The Mightiest Nein

Having watched the first episode of The Mighty Nein, it’s clear this series is going to be a lot grittier and more intense than The Legend of Vox Machina. Though it’s not confirmed yet, there’s enough story from the original podcast to support a full season, just like the first one. It’s exciting to think that if this does well on Amazon Prime Video, we might see even more Critical Role campaigns adapted in the future. I definitely got the impression this world has a lot more stories to tell.
Currently, Critical Role is welcoming a new Dungeon Master. Brennan Lee Mulligan, from Dropout, will be leading the show going forward. Travis Willingham, the podcast’s CEO, shared that Mulligan’s enthusiasm and talent for creating immersive worlds are inspiring, and he’s excited to collaborate with him on the fourth campaign.
Speaking about the upcoming first season of The Mighty Nein, Willingham expressed immense pride in Critical Role’s next animated project. He teased that it will be a significant step up from previous work, calling it “bigger, badder, and better.” He added that 2025 will bring many exciting reveals for fans. The premiere episode demonstrates that Critical Role is successfully building on its existing world with this more intense story.
