Amazon’s Post-Apocalyptic Series Adaptation Of Novel That Inspired Stephen King’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece Is Now A Streaming Hit

A series that inspired Stephen King has reemerged as a streaming hit.

Stephen King is a fan of the MGM+ streaming service, which is owned by Amazon. He’s currently working on the second season of an adaptation of his 2019 novel, The Institute. He also publicly praised the horror series From, and was one of the first to recognize its potential, which has now made it a popular streaming show.

Stephen King’s novel, The Stand, was originally inspired by George R. Stewart’s influential 1949 book, Earth Abides, which has inspired many stories since. A TV adaptation of Earth Abides first appeared on MGM+ in December 2024, and it’s now regaining popularity on the streaming service, almost two years later.

The series Earth Abides is currently popular on MGM+, ranking at number 3 in the U.S. It dropped only one spot from its previous position at number 2. According to FlixPatrol, the show is also gaining traction in Germany, where it recently reached number 8.

The new MGM+ series, Earth Abides, created by Todd Komarnicki—the writer of the film Sully—follows the aftermath of a devastating global plague. The plague nearly wipes out humanity and brings civilization to a standstill. The six-episode show centers on a small group of survivors as they struggle with the emotional toll of the disaster and fight to prevent the complete end of humankind.

Alexander Ludwig, known for his roles in Heels and The Hunger Games, stars as Ish, a survivor in a changed world. Ish is a gifted but solitary geologist who awakens from a coma to discover he’s one of the last people on Earth. He soon finds that with so few survivors remaining, establishing order is a major challenge.

The cast of Earth Abides also includes Jessica Frances Dukes, Aaron Tveit, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Elyse Levesque, Luisa D’Oliveira, Kett Turton, Hilary McCormack, and Jenna Berman. When it was first released, the show didn’t get much attention, receiving only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

It seems like interest in Earth Abides, a brief six-episode series, is being renewed as Ludwig prepares for a prominent role in the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus.
