After 12 years on TBS, American Dad! is returning to FOX, and we now know when the new season will begin! FOX is heavily investing in its animated shows for adults, renewing The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers for four more seasons each. In a surprising move, they also renewed American Dad! for another four seasons, ensuring the show won’t be cancelled and bringing it back to its original network.
After originally airing on FOX until 2014 with eleven seasons, American Dad! moved to TBS. Now, FOX has announced that the show will return to its network as part of its 2026 midseason lineup, premiering on Sunday, February 22nd, alongside returning favorites and new seasons of other animated series.
American Dad Returns to FOX After 12 Years
FOX has announced that Season 22 (or Season 20, depending on how it’s counted) of American Dad! will premiere on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 9:00 PM Eastern Time. The good news is the show is renewed for four additional seasons, meaning fans can enjoy new episodes for years to come. This return to FOX will be especially welcome for viewers who didn’t watch when the show moved to TBS.
Interestingly, American Dad! actually performed better on TBS than it did on FOX. The show ran for 11 years on TBS, making it the longest and most successful period in the series’ history. In fact, American Dad! became the last original program produced for TBS. With the show returning to FOX, it’s likely that production will change to align with FOX’s broadcasting guidelines.
Get Ready for a New American Dad
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, American Dad executive producer Matt Weitzman announced that the show will no longer be able to use the words “shit” and “God damn it.” However, he added that the writers are confident they can still be funny and entertaining. Overall, the team is excited to continue making many more episodes with FOX.
I was really thrilled to hear that American Dad is getting another 56 episodes! We’ve had a great run – eight years on Fox, then ten on TBS. Honestly, I was overjoyed when I learned we’d be returning to Fox for four more years. I’d braced myself for potentially finding a new home for the show, so getting to go back to Fox is just fantastic news.
