Amy Madigan has certainly bewitched the Oscars voters.
Actress Weapons won the 2026 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys. She was recognized over fellow nominees Teyana Taylor (from One Battle After Another), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), and her Sentimental Value co-stars Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.
Amy had a touching moment accepting her award at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 15th, during a ceremony hosted by Conan O’Brien. She especially thanked her husband of 42 years, Ed Harris, with whom she shares 32-year-old daughter, Lily Harris. (You can find a complete list of winners here.)
You know, standing up here, the first person I have to thank is my amazing Ed. He’s been by my side through everything, and honestly, it feels like forever – a really, really long time! He’s my rock, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.
She went on to say, “It wouldn’t be the same without him here with me. Thank you all so much, I’m truly overwhelmed with emotion.”
As someone who’s seen a lot of awards seasons come and go, I always find the graciousness of nominees so inspiring. Amy, in particular, took a moment to thank her fellow nominees for all their support, and honestly, that kind of camaraderie is what it’s all about. It’s lovely to see people lifting each other up, even while competing!
Amy’s recent win is especially significant because it came 40 years after her first Oscar nomination for the 1985 film Twice in a Lifetime. This sets a new record for the longest gap between a first nomination and a first win. She notes that going through awards season now is a vastly different experience than it was four decades ago.
You know, I was chatting with Amy recently, and she really hit the nail on the head. She was describing how different things were ‘back then,’ and it got me thinking. It wasn’t the all-consuming, hyper-connected world we live in now. There was a simplicity to it – no endless scrolling on social media, no podcasts vying for your attention, just…less. It really highlights how much the landscape has changed, doesn’t it? We’re constantly bombarded with information and options now, and sometimes it’s nice to remember a time when things felt a little more…manageable.

Even though things were different this time, she was still thrilled that other people in her field appreciated her work.
“It’s honestly a lot to take in,” Amy admitted. “It feels amazing when people tell you they notice and appreciate your work. It’s a really good feeling.”
It was particularly thrilling to be at the Oscars representing a horror movie like Weapons, and to portray such a fascinating character as Aunt Gladys—a parasitic witch who is responsible for the disappearance of seventeen children in the film.
Amy explained that she appreciates people recognizing horror as a legitimate and serious form of filmmaking. She also mentioned the strong positive reaction to the character of Aunt Gladys.
