Sequels rarely outperform the movies they follow, but a new animated film now streaming on Peacock has done just that. Throughout December, Peacock has added a lot of popular titles, including The Addams Family and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. This week, they added a DreamWorks sequel that many consider even better than the first film.
The new movie, The Croods: A New Age, continues the story of the Crood family. They stumble upon a seemingly perfect, protected world and have to learn to get along with the Bettermans – another family who are a bit more advanced. The film boasts a fantastic voice cast, including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds. You can now watch it on Peacock, alongside the first Croods movie and the The Croods: Family Tree TV series.
The Croods: A New Age Is a Perfect Sequel
While The Croods: A New Age didn’t earn as much at the box office as the first Croods movie ($215 million versus $587 million, with a $65 million budget), it was much better received by critics and audiences. It earned a “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 76% score and audiences a 94% rating – a noticeable improvement over the original film’s 71% critic score and 77% audience score.
The sequel exceeded expectations by perfectly balancing what made the first film great with a broadened story. Fans will still enjoy everything they loved about The Croods – the familiar characters, funny moments for all ages, and stunning visuals. However, The Croods: A New Age raises the emotional intensity and expands the world with imaginative new creatures and settings.
This movie goes beyond simply showing the characters trying to survive; it builds on the spirit of the first film by introducing new characters like the Bettermans and exploring Grug’s challenges as his children grow. These additions create a more moving and heartfelt story. It’s also very funny, with plenty of quick, silly jokes that will entertain audiences of all ages. Overall, The Croods: A New Age is a successful and fun sequel that fans of the original are sure to love.
