The 1980s produced some truly memorable movies, offering a diverse range of genres and delivering classics we still enjoy today. Action films were especially popular, with titles like Die Hard, Indiana Jones, and Lethal Weapon leading the way. Several films also appealed to a younger audience with rising stars, and one of the most beloved from that era is now available to stream – and many fans prefer the original to its 2012 remake.
The 1984 film Red Dawn, featuring Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Grey, tells the story of a group of teenagers in Colorado who fight back after an invasion during World War III. While reviews were mixed, the movie was popular with audiences and is notable as the very first film to receive a PG-13 rating. You can now watch it for free on Kanopy this month.
Red Dawn Played on the Cultural Fears of the 1980s
The 1980s were filled with anxieties about World War II and the spread of Communism, and the movie Red Dawn tapped into those fears. The film depicts a scenario where the U.S. is largely on its own after NATO falls apart and nuclear weapons are removed from Europe. The Soviet Union, aided by Cuba and Nicaragua, strengthens its military and starts invading countries to gain power. When Soviet forces invade the Colorado town of Calumet, a group of teenagers flees to the mountains. After discovering the Soviets have killed their family members, these teens launch a guerilla war against the occupying forces, while also learning about the dire situation unfolding across the globe.
Though it features teenagers battling against a supposed enemy, the movie Red Dawn is surprisingly dark. However, it remains an engaging action film, and watching it today provides a window into the anxieties and political climate of the 1980s, when the Cold War and the Soviet Union loomed large. It’s fascinating to see how those fears played out in popular entertainment at the time.
The concept of young people battling a powerful foe is a classic story, so it wasn’t shocking when Red Dawn was remade in 2012. However, despite having a strong cast, the remake doesn’t come close to the quality of the original. The 2012 version, starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, and others, follows a similar story, but updates the enemy to North Korea and the setting to Spokane, Washington. It also adds details related to the 2008 financial crisis. Unfortunately, the remake was a box office failure and received very negative reviews. While it’s available to stream on Prime Video, if you’re interested in watching Red Dawn, the original is the better choice.
The original, 1984 Red Dawn is now streaming for free on Kanopy.
