An Iconic Tim Burton Movie Is Getting a Sequel After More Than 25 Years

Among Tim Burton‘s numerous past works, there’s an unexpected resurgence for a particular project. Known for his unique mix of dark, fantastical films such as “Beetlejuice,” its sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “The Night Before Christmas,” and “Edward Scissorhands,” Burton has also collaborated with A-list Hollywood stars. Notably, his partnership with Johnny Depp has resulted in several critically acclaimed films. One such collaboration, which was initially released over 25 years ago, is being revisited once more on the big screen.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a new comic book titled “Return to Sleepy Hollow” is set to be released, acting as a continuation of Tim Burton’s 1999 film, “Sleepy Hollow.” This upcoming story unfolds 15 years after the events in the original film. The comic book will be distributed by IDW Publishing’s horror division, IDW Dark, and penned by Eisner Award winner Casey Gilly (known for writing “Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer”). Savanna Mayer, who is making their comics debut with this series, will handle the illustrations.

In the series Sleepy Hollow, Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Crane, a New York City police constable who is sent to the quaint town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of grisly decapitations by the Headless Horseman. Christina Ricci stars as Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy businessman and Ichabod’s eventual love interest. As Ichabod battles the Headless Horseman to save Katrina, he also finds himself falling for her. In Return to Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod returns to Sleepy Hollow after establishing himself as a skeptic of supernatural phenomena globally. A letter urges him back to investigate a new string of mysterious deaths, leading him to reunite with his estranged lover, Katrina.

In her statement to EW, Gilly expressed that when an opportunity like the one she received lands in her inbox, she feels a strong instinctive urge, almost as if she’d turn into a wild animal if she didn’t get to write it. Sleepy Hollow is such an opportunity, and as soon as she saw Savanna’s amazing artwork, she felt that it was destined for her.

Gilly expressed her enthusiasm, as she’s deeply intrigued by spiritualism, Victorian funeral traditions, and folklore. Merging these interests in the realm of ‘Sleepy Hollow’ has filled her older gothic soul with joy. Crafting scripts for Savanna and witnessing her enchanting, sophisticated, and grotesquely captivating artwork bring the book to life is a pleasure. She’s an artist to watch out for.

In high school, there were constant whispers that I only drew deceased individuals. Now, though, I’m earning money doing just that! “Bones, trees, historical garb,” Mayer exclaimed, “I couldn’t ask for anything better.” Inspired by fantastic folklore from my home state, I’m overjoyed about the launch of my comic book debut. With themes of eerie forests, historical clothing, and gory scenes, it’s a dream come true to illustrate Sleepy Hollow, and I feel incredibly fortunate with the variety of choices at hand.

We’re thrilled to carry on the narrative of Tim Burton’s 1999 film “Sleepy Hollow”. Fans of this movie, horror, gothic romance, and the peculiar will find much to delight in our series. According to editor Riley Farmer, the story is filled with spine-tingling murders, heartfelt moments, and enigmatic supernatural puzzles. Savanna Mayer skillfully portrays it all, using eerie, gothic visuals that add both life and death to the tale. Prepare for Ichabod’s return to Sleepy Hollow in a story that promises to leave you bewildered!
