This is one category that definitely saw some action.
The 2026 Oscars made history on March 15th when, for only the seventh time ever, an award was given to two winners.
At the Dolby Theatre ceremony, presenter Kumail Nanjiani was surprised to announce a tie in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Both The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva won the award. (You can find a complete list of winners here).
“It’s a complete stalemate,” the Silicon Valley graduate said. “I’m serious – it’s a true tie. So let’s all stay calm. We’ll figure this out if we concentrate.”
Before this year, the Academy Awards hadn’t seen a tie since 2013, when both Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty won for Sound Editing. However, the most memorable tie was likely in 1969, when Katharine Hepburn (for The Lion in Winter) and Barbra Streisand (for Funny Girl) both won Best Actress.
Filmmakers Jack Piatt and Sam A. Davis were the first to accept their award for The Singers. Shortly after, Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata, the creators of Two People Exchanging Saliva, came onstage to receive theirs.
Alexandre believes art has the power to profoundly impact people, potentially transforming society over time through creativity, including mediums like theater, ballet, and film. He was echoing similar thoughts recently expressed by Timothée Chalamet.
Natalie also expressed her gratitude to the Academy, thanking them for recognizing a film she described as unique, unconventional, and created primarily by women.
Kumail joked about the historic win, pointing out the irony that the award for the shortest film was taking the longest to present.
