The 2000s produced many memorable animated films, including classics like Shrek, Lilo & Stitch, Ratatouille, and Finding Nemo. However, some great movies from that decade didn’t get the attention they deserved. Now, Tubi is offering a chance to revisit two of these hidden gems, but they won’t be available to stream for much longer.
Tubi is currently streaming both Open Season and Open Season 2, but they won’t be available for long! Added on February 1st, both films are already scheduled to leave Tubi before the end of the month. These Sony Pictures Animation movies follow Boog, a grizzly bear (voiced by Martin Lawrence in the first film and Mike Epps in the second), and Elliot, a mule deer with one antler (voiced by Ashton Kutcher and later Joel McHale). The original movie from 2006 tells the story of their adventure to get home before hunting season begins, while the 2008 sequel sees them teaming up again to rescue their dachshund friend after he’s kidnapped by some pampered pets.
Open Season Is a Fun, Lighthearted Animated Adventure Perfect for the Entire Family
While not the most outstanding animated film, Open Season is definitely enjoyable and a good starting point for exploring Sony Pictures Animation’s work – which includes popular movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, Spider-Man: Across the Universe, and KPop Demon Hunters. The movie’s humor comes from the funny pairing of Boog, a proper bear, and Elliot, a clumsy deer, and their relationship leads to a surprisingly sweet story about friendship. The music, featuring songs by artists like Paul Westerberg, Pete Yorn, and Talking Heads, is upbeat and adds to the fun, and the animation has a charming, storybook-like quality.
Despite receiving mixed reactions from both critics and viewers – with scores of 48% and 57% on Rotten Tomatoes – the movie Open Season unexpectedly became a successful series for Sony Pictures Animation. It resonated with its young audience and led to three sequels, released through 2015 with Open Season: Scared Silly. The franchise also included the short film Boog and Elliot’s Midnight Bun Run and the animated series Open Season: Call of Nature, which concluded in 2024.
Where to Stream Open Season and Open Season 2 After They Leave Tubi?
If you’re a fan of the Open Season movies, now’s the time to watch the first two films on Tubi. They aren’t available on any other streaming services, and it’s unclear if they’ll be added to a different platform anytime soon. Once they leave Tubi, your only option will likely be to rent or buy them digitally. The third and fourth Open Season movies aren’t currently streaming either, but you can find the Open Season: Call of Nature series on Tubi.
