And Just Like That’s emotional Carrie and Aidan development finally answers big question

As we approached Season 3 of “And Just Like That”, a significant question arose that seemed crucial to find out: Will Carrie and Aidan manage to stay together?

To ensure Aidan was there for his youngest son, Wyatt, during a challenging time, they opted for a long-distance relationship instead.

Although that wasn’t free from difficulties, another problem arose, one that was both unforeseen yet entirely foreseeable, and ultimately insurmountable. In episode 9, titled “Present Tense,” they decided to end their relationship – a connection that, in truth, had never truly taken off.

In eager anticipation of sharing some screen time, I was overjoyed when Aidan graced our screens in episode 8, titled ‘Happily Ever After’. To my delight, he arrived laden with a greater-than-usual abundance of intriguing plotlines.

As it happened, Wyatt was now living with his mother. This wasn’t the most favorable situation for Aidan, but it did mean he could now stay with Carrie for extended periods, which seemed like it would greatly benefit their relationship, didn’t it?

Given the recent reports that Aidan and his former wife Kathy have rekindled their intimacy while being separated?

Wrong. So very wrong.

Indeed, rather than saying it, let me rephrase: No, cohabiting for a short while, Carrie and Aidan found out, surprisingly, that their long-distance relationship might have delayed their breakup. In the latest episode, “Present Tense,” they formally ended their relationship.

The problems started shortly after Aidan’s arrival.

When he proposed inviting Duncan, the well-known biographer who often collaborates with Carrie downstairs, for a meal, she showed resistance.

“We’re living in the same house and I don’t even know him,” said Aidan.

“Yeah, I don’t even know him… it’s just all about our books, we just talk about work.”

But Aidan was sceptical.

He responded, “That’s tough for me to swallow,” implying, “You two are just staring at each other without saying anything meaningful on page 22?

Carrie then repeated herself, more firmly this time.

You nailed it – page 22 leaves much to be desired,” she commented. “To put it simply, our dynamic mirrors that description, and I’d rather things stay the same. No need for any sugarcoating or friendly neighborhood lessons.

But Aidan simply couldn’t “keep it that way”.

During the unveiling of an art exhibit, Aidan subtly inquired about Duncan while chatting with Seema, thus delicately violating Carrie’s firm instruction to avoid discussing Duncan.

In episode 9, instead of respecting the boundary she had set, he started a chat with Duncan in the garden. This conversation began after Aidan waited on the terrace for him, and it quickly turned into teasing about his pipe, which made Carrie extremely uncomfortable. However, Aidan didn’t seem to notice her discomfort at all.

However, Carrie was understanding towards him, taking into account that she herself had been unfaithful to him with Big in the past. She recognized that he seemed uneasy about her growing connection with Duncan – a commendable act on her part, given his recent tryst with Kathy. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Carrie has made every effort to keep their relationship on track in this new phase.

Yet, showing him understanding towards Carrie, he didn’t take any action to resolve the problem directly. The matter resurfaced again after their most recent writing session with Duncan.

Following Aidan interrupting both Carrie and Duncan, persistently advocating for a shared meal even after her multiple, courteous affirmations, they eventually wound up resting in different beds when he rather unkindly instructed her to bathe away the aroma of Duncan’s pipe.

The following day, after my efforts to reconcile, my friend and I found ourselves embroiled in an intense argument right on the sidewalk, reminiscent of the heated disagreements we used to have during the early 2000s.

She asked, “Why hasn’t my dedication been evident enough to you yet?” She’s gone above and beyond to prove her commitment towards you. She’s shifted continents and homes. She’s made compromises that she herself found challenging.

“I was 100 per cent in, 100 per cent.”

Afterward, Aidan asked whether Carrie was still fully committed, or if she had changed her mind. At this point, Carrie indicated otherwise by shaking her head.

Indeed, dealing with “the family matters” turned out to be incredibly challenging, yet upon reflection, the most significant obstacle that Carrie and Aidan faced was their own relationship.

In the preceding installment, Carrie penned that it appeared as though time itself had slowed to a crawl before the woman experienced an overwhelming sense of joy, seemingly out of nowhere, much like the enchanting sight of a vibrant red bird unexpectedly gracing one’s backyard.

“You hold your breath and remain very still, not wanting it to fly away again.”

Regardless of how motionless she seemed on this occasion, I’ve come to understand: some avian souls are destined for flight.
