Andrew Lincoln Teases Rick Grimes’ Return to The Walking Dead Universe 3 Years After His Last Appearance

Andrew Lincoln played Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead for nine seasons and then took the lead in the spinoff The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live in 2022. Now, he’s hinted at coming back to the series again. Rick Grimes, a former sheriff’s deputy, woke up from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies and quickly became the leader of a group of survivors in Atlanta. He guided them for many years, and although he seemingly sacrificed himself in season nine, it looks like his story might not be over.

Laura Kuenssberg recently interviewed actors Andrew Lincoln and Alicia Vikander on her show about their upcoming play, *The Lady from the Sea*. During the September 21, 2025 episode, Kuenssberg also spoke with Lincoln about his experience working on *The Walking Dead* in the US, which he described as a very positive time. He even hinted at a possible return to the show, stating that discussions are currently underway, strongly suggesting that his character, Rick Grimes, will be back.

When Could Rick Grimes Return to The Walking Dead?

When we last saw Rick Grimes in *The Walking Dead* universe, he and Michonne had returned and reunited with their daughter, Judith, and Rick finally got to meet his son, Rick Jr. The story picks up over seven years after Rick was presumed dead in a bridge explosion during season 9 of *The Walking Dead*. During those years, he had been working for the Civic Republic Military. Their return in *The Ones Who Live* promises more emotional reunions with loved ones.

Fans have been wondering if Rick and Michonne will reconnect with their original group now that they’re back in the Commonwealth, not just focus on their children. Some believe this could happen in the last season of *The Walking Dead* (season 12), which would wrap up the series. There’s also a possibility that the final season of *The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon* could bring Daryl and Carol back to the US to reunite with Rick. And, we might see a second season of *The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live*, continuing Rick and Michonne’s story even further.

There were earlier discussions about making movies centered around Rick Grimes after the events on the bridge, and those plans haven’t been completely ruled out, with Andrew Lincoln potentially returning to the role. Fans would likely be thrilled to see Lincoln reprise his famous role as Rick Grimes. You can read the complete interview with Laura Kuenssberg here:

I’m such a fan of Laura Kuenssberg’s interviews! She just has a way of setting the scene. In this one, she was talking to someone who’d been on *The Walking Dead* – honestly, it’s huge, one of the biggest shows ever, and she pointed out they were involved for nine seasons! It’s amazing to think about that kind of commitment to a project, and she brought it up so naturally.

Andrew Lincoln: “I did, yeah.”

Laura Kuenssberg asked if he ever questioned his decision to stay with the show for so long, wondering if he’d considered leaving after four or five years instead of continuing for nine.

I don’t dwell on the past, and I truly enjoyed my time working in America. I made wonderful friends and have a deep belief in the country. The whole experience was incredibly exciting. I especially cherish the 250 people I worked with in Atlanta, Georgia, and felt a strong sense of responsibility towards them. Leading that large project felt like running a major company. I was exhausted afterward, so it’s been wonderful to focus on a few simple things that reminded me why I love acting.

Kuenssberg: “Would you ever go back to it? It was a huge part of your life.”

Lincoln said he’s currently in discussions about a show, but he’s really happy with his work on a project with Alicia Vikander and a fantastic cast. He enjoys the opportunity to try new and different things.
