Andy Muschietti Wants to Make Three Seasons of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season finale of It: Welcome to Derry. Andy Muschietti, the director and co-creator of the show, has shared his plans for future seasons now that Season 1 has finished. Andy and his sister, Barbara Muschietti, who is also a producer, have always intended for the series to span three seasons, and it’s clear the story of It: Welcome to Derry is far from over.

In a recent interview with TVLine, the Muschiettis discussed the show’s shocking ending and what it means for the future. Barbara Muschietti addressed the possibility of a renewal with HBO, admitting it’s an expensive show to produce and maintains a high standard of quality, but adding, “Everyone wants to make it happen.”

Andy explained the Season 1 finale’s ending – a clear hint about what was to come in It: Welcome to Derry. It was actually added quite late in the process, similar to the surprise at the end of the 2017 It movie, which signaled that the story would be told in two parts. Muschietti shared details about the planned three-season storyline and shed light on the unexpected final scene of the Season 1 finale.

From the very beginning, we planned for the show to have three seasons, each focusing on one of the major disasters detailed in the book’s interludes. These events are the burning of the Black Spot in 1962, the massacre of the Bradley Gang in 1935, and the explosion at the Easter egg hunt in 1908. We shifted the dates slightly for the show, but this three-part structure was always our core idea – we envisioned a complete story told over three seasons.

We decided to add ‘Chapter One’ to the end of the latest installment during editing, hoping to recapture the excitement we created at the end of our first film. With the first movie, many viewers didn’t realize it was the first part of a larger story, which was necessary to fully adapt the book. We fondly remember the audience reaction – a lot of surprised screams – when ‘Chapter One’ appeared on screen. So, when we finished this season, I thought, ‘Let’s do that again,’ and we did!

How Does ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Connect to the Previous Film Chapters?

Warner Bros. Pictures

If you haven’t watched the Season 1 finale yet, be careful – we’ll avoid specific details. However, the next section does contain spoilers, so consider yourself warned!

The series builds on the events of the 2017 and 2019 movies, sharing the same world created by the Muschiettis. The first season ends by directly connecting characters from both time periods. We learn that Marge Truman, who was seriously injured in a key scene, is the mother of one of the original Losers Club members. Plus, a character from the 2017 movie makes a brief appearance at the end, solidifying the connection between the series and the films and making them all part of one continuous story.

Time works differently in the world of It. We initially believed the creature’s 27-year feeding cycle was the only temporal concern, but it’s actually more complex. The series finale revealed that the past doesn’t necessarily dictate the future, and hints at a time-based element that could create problems if the story continues with Welcome to Derry.
