Andy Muschietti isn’t done with the IT franchise when it comes to the big screen.
Before the season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry, director Andy Muschietti—who also co-created and executive produced the series—joined his sister and co-creator, Barbara Muschietti, for a Q&A session on Reddit. While fans asked about their work on the IT franchise, a popular topic was Andy’s previous mention of creating a single, combined movie by editing together his 2017 and 2019 IT films.
Andy Muschietti confirmed that his longer cut of IT, including several hours of footage that didn’t make the original film, is still planned. While he hasn’t been able to work on it recently, he says it remains a project he wants to complete.
It’s still a major goal for me. We’ve been so focused on working on ‘Welcome to Derry’ that we haven’t had the chance to make it happen yet, but I’m hopeful we can soon.
Andy Muschietti first mentioned a potential extended cut of the IT films back in 2019, shortly after the second movie came out. It’s good to hear that idea hasn’t been forgotten after all these years. He’s been focused on other projects, most notably the IT: Welcome to Derry prequel series for HBO.
| Movie | Runtime | Box Office |
|---|---|---|
| IT (2017) | 2 hours 15 minutes | $702.8 million |
| IT Chapter Two (2019) | 2 hours 49 minutes | $473.1 million |
As a big fan of IT, I’ve been eagerly waiting for any news about the supercut movie since 2019, and it feels like things are finally starting to pick up again now that Andy and Barbara Muschietti are back in the spotlight with Welcome to Derry. They’re currently planning a three-season arc for the show, which is awesome, and I’m hoping all that buzz will reignite interest in seeing a longer, complete IT movie back on the big screen. Fingers crossed!
HBO hasn’t renewed IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season yet, so don’t expect any news about a movie combining the seasons anytime soon. Any future IT movies are also on hold until the show’s future is clear – the Muschietti brothers have only talked about them as possibilities after the first season ended.
If the HBO series Welcome to Derry does well, it could encourage director Andy Muschietti to get Warner Bros. to approve his longer, complete cut of IT. The recent success of Quentin Tarantino’s extended Kill Bill release in theaters shows there’s potential for a similar, nearly five-hour version of IT to also play in cinemas one day.
If the planned extended cut of It happens as director Andy Muschietti hopes, it will feature scenes not included in the original movie releases. This would result in a film over six hours long – just a bit shorter than the almost eight-hour length of the first season of Welcome to Derry.
