Angelina Jolie Sets First Gangster Movie In 27 Years With Acclaimed Director

Filming has started on a new, suspenseful thriller, and a well-known television director is involved. The Academy Award-winning actress recently appeared in the French film Couture, which premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Before that, her last roles were in Maria (2024) and Eternals (2021).

According to Deadline, Angelina Jolie will star in the new thriller Sunny, about a woman trying to shield herself and her sons from a dangerous crime boss. After a catastrophe strikes, she has just hours to get them to safety. The film will be directed by Eva Sørhaug, who has previously directed episodes of Yellowjackets and Tokyo Vice.

Angelina Jolie is still a major star in Hollywood, famously winning an Oscar for her role in the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted. She’s also well-known for movies like Salt, Maleficent, Changeling, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, among others. While she’s done many genres, one of the last times she appeared in a film that could be considered a gangster movie was in 1998’s Hell Kitchen, which follows a group of people after a failed robbery.

The film Sunny has received backing from Gramercy Park Media, A Higher Standard, and Nickel City Pictures. The screenplay was written by William Day Frank, known for his work on Susie Searches and Fixation, and is based on a story he co-created with Sørhaug. Mark Fasano, a producer with Nickel City Pictures, described the recent Golden Globe nominee’s performance in Sunny as a standout, telling Deadline that it’s truly remarkable.

Audiences will be surprised by the powerful performance Angelina Jolie delivers in this intense role. The film depicts a brutal world where survival and family are paramount, and a mother will stop at nothing to keep her sons safe.

Angelina Jolie is producing the film Sunny with Sandra Fasano, Jeffrey Greenstein from A Higher Standard, and Nathan Klingher of Gramercy Park.
