A new game aiming to compete with Pokémon has arrived, and it hopes to succeed where so many others haven’t. Aniimo is the latest in a long series of video games that have tried to recreate the magic of the original Pokémon, which first captivated players 30 years ago. While many have fallen short, games like Digimon and, recently, Palworld have come close to achieving similar popularity. Aniimo feels most similar to Palworld. But will it be able to stand out and truly succeed?
Aniimo is a new open-world RPG from Pawprint Studio that shares similarities with popular creature-collecting games. You’ll catch, train, battle, and evolve creatures in a large world, but with a unique twist: you can actually become your creatures. As the Pathfinder, you’ll fight as them, though you can also switch to a command mode for more traditional control.
The core idea behind team composition is called ‘twining,’ and it impacts more than just combat. If you include a flying Aniimo in your party (you can have up to four), you’ll be able to glide around the game world. You’ll also use your Aniimo to solve puzzles. Like many creature-collecting games, certain Aniimo types are strong against others – for example, water is effective against fire. Luckily, you can switch between your Aniimo whenever you want, even during battles! These features combine to create a truly unique gameplay experience.
What really sets Aniimo apart is its world. Compared to Pokémon, which often has limited graphics due to budget constraints, and Palworld, which closely copies Pokémon, Aniimo boasts a detailed and beautiful environment. I found myself simply enjoying exploring the landscape, and that felt fresh – something fans of this type of game will likely love.
I only had a short time – just 30 minutes – with the Aniimo demo at Summer Game Fest, and I was immediately dropped into the game without any explanation, which is typical for events like that. Even so, what I saw definitely grabbed my attention! The game has a lot going on: the Aniimo creatures themselves, quests, bases to build, exploration… plus a complicated menu. Because of all this, players will really need to play through the tutorial to avoid getting confused and losing their first battle.
