The new fall anime season is underway, and as always, some shows are hitting it out of the park while others are struggling. This season, the difference in reception is particularly stark, with fans enthusiastically praising one adaptation and heavily criticizing another. Both of these series are returning after a hiatus, making it a good time to explore what’s working so well for one and why the other is facing backlash. It appears anime fans largely agree on these two shows, though their opinions are quite different.
The latest episode of *My Hero Academia* season eight, titled “The End of an Era, And The Beginning,” powerfully blends flashbacks of Toshinori Yagi’s past with his current battle against All For One. Many viewers consider it one of the most impactful and emotionally resonant episodes of the series so far, and Studio BONES has been praised for elevating the story. In contrast, the premiere of *One-Punch Man* season three has received criticism from fans. Viewers feel that JC Staff hasn’t successfully captured the spirit of the original material, a sentiment reflected in the show’s ratings: *My Hero Academia* currently holds a 9.7/10, while *One-Punch Man*’s premiere is rated 6.4/10.
One-Punch Man Stumbles, While My Hero Soars
The third season of *One-Punch Man* faced a lot of discussion even before it aired, largely because it took over five years to follow up on the second season. Surprisingly, the director admitted on social media that fans shouldn’t expect too much. Shinpei Nagai, the director, specifically asked fans to lower their expectations, stating:
I understand how much this series means to you, and I’m ready to take on the responsibility of continuing it. I know some of you might not be happy with the direction it takes, and that’s okay. But someone needs to keep it going, and I’m willing to do that. I’m optimistic, though I don’t expect it to be quite as strong as the first season. Please remember that this project still represents the hard work and creativity of its original team. It’s also important to acknowledge that many talented people are now working at larger, corporate-backed studios. My priority remains supporting J.C. Staff and working to improve things for its employees. I’m asking you to please stop the harassment and constant questioning about things I can’t discuss due to confidentiality agreements. I truly appreciate your understanding.
It’s no surprise *My Hero Academia* is so popular, given Studio BONES’ history of quality animation and the strong writing of creator Kohei Horikoshi. The final season, which began about a year after the seventh season ended, is delivering an action-packed conclusion to the superhero story. Even though the manga finished last year, the anime still has plenty of exciting moments planned for its final episodes.
I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks of the anime ratings for this fall! Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and join the discussion over at the ComicBook Forum.
