Anna Maxwell Martin admits she “apologised” after “terse” Motherland audition

Anna Maxwell Martin recently shared her experience auditioning for Motherland, recalling that she wasn’t very chatty or friendly during her initial meeting with the show’s creators.

When the actress auditioned for Motherland in 2016, she was already an award-winning performer, having previously won two BAFTAs for her roles in Bleak House and Poppy Shakespeare.

The actress, clearly upset, admitted she was quite angry and didn’t say much. She described being “pretty cross in the room… I was pretty terse.”

Maxwell Martin’s agent told her she did well in her first audition for Motherland and they asked her to come back for another one.

I immediately said, ‘No way! Why do they want another meeting?’ He told me, ‘They want to meet again because they’re a little intimidated by you.’

Maxwell Martin, who played the wild character Julia, now cringes when he thinks about how she acted. He admits he immediately apologized to everyone when he arrived on set.

The comedy series Motherland ended in December 2022 with a heartwarming Christmas episode, and viewers have been hoping it will return ever since.

I was reading an interview with Maxwell Martin in The Times recently, and he explained that they felt like ‘Ted Lasso’ just naturally wrapped up after three seasons. It sounds like everyone involved agreed it was the right time to finish the show – a pretty satisfying conclusion, if you ask me!

She explained they weren’t upset about the show ending because they were proud of the work they’d done. She also expressed her happiness that the spin-off, Amandaland, had done well.

When asked if she’d appear on the new spin-off series, Maxwell Martin quickly replied, “No, that show belongs to them.”

“Amandaland” centers on Lucy Punch as Amanda, who is navigating the challenges of single motherhood after relocating from Chiswick to South Harlesden. The transition hasn’t been smooth.

The show quickly became popular with BBC viewers, and the network ordered a third season only a few weeks after the second season premiered.

Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard, the creators and writers of the BAFTA-winning comedy Amandaland, are excited to return to SoHa for a third series. They’re also pleased the show has become more popular than Amanda’s own Instagram account!

We’re getting ready to start writing new scripts with the help of AI, and we’re excited to work again with our fantastic actors and team.

Motherland is available to watch on catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
