The ensemble for Robert Eggers’ upcoming film, titled Werwulf, is starting to resemble a familiar lineup, as Willem Dafoe has reportedly been approached to join the cast. As per a report from Deadline, if Dafoe accepts, he will be sharing the screen with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in this upcoming project. There’s also talk of Lily Rose-Depp joining as well, making it something of a reunion for the cast of the 2025 release, Nosferatu. Details about Eggers’ Werwulf are scarce at this point, but unlike the horror remake that brought these actors together last year, it doesn’t seem to be based on a straightforward storyline. However, the film is currently scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2026. Eggers will collaborate with writer Sjón on the script once again, and Werwulf will be produced and financed by Focus Features.
Refashioning “Nosferatu” for a contemporary audience is said to have been a long-cherished aspiration for Eggers, yet he hasn’t exhausted the horror or creature-themed projects just yet. As of now, not much has been disclosed about his werewolf film except that it will be set in medieval England during the 13th century. Given the success of “Nosferatu”, it comes as no shock that Eggers would reunite the same crew for another period piece like this one. De Niro, notably, appears to be a source of inspiration for the director, featuring in three out of four of his recent films.
In contrast to many members of the Nosferatu cast who have appeared in significant franchise productions, Dafoe has been keeping quite busy with standalone projects. As I write this, he has four films in post-production and one more currently being filmed. It’s only recently that Dafoe found himself juggling roles within the superhero universe. He reprised his part as Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: No Way Home, just after wrapping up his stint as Vulko in the DC Extended Universe.
Daniel Dafoe clearly cherishes his time on the glider role, often expressing to interviewers his openness to reprise the Green Goblin character again. Recently, he told Entertainment Tonight that he’d be thrilled at the prospect of collaborating with Tom Holland and the rest of the Spider-Man cast once more. As the Multiverse Saga approaches its climax, interconnected stories like this one are expected to become even more prevalent in the next two years. Given the star-studded cast already confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, another performance by Dafoe is not entirely out of the question.
In the interim, enthusiasts can anticipate Daniel Dafoe’s upcoming project with Eggers, “Werwulf,” which is set to debut on Christmas Day 2026.
