Even though the servers for Anthem are now shut down, dedicated fans have quickly begun exploring ways to keep the game alive. As reported by Kotaku, a player named And799 has shared a video demonstrating how they’ve successfully run the game’s server components on their own computer.
And799 managed to get the online shooter running on a local server. While the server is still under development and many online features, like player profiles, aren’t working yet, they were able to set it up so two players could connect by running multiple instances of the game.
Just wanted to clarify what this video is about – it’s basically me taking notes while I mess around with the server stuff, trying to figure things out. Don’t take it as a sign of how far along the actual private server project is, it’s just my research log!
Mark Darrah, a former executive producer on the game Anthem, recently shared a detailed video about its development. In the video, he discussed the potential for bringing the game back as a live-service title. His proposal involved a $10 million investment from EA, which he believed could be recouped if Anthem sold over 400,000 copies. Darrah suggested updating the game for current-generation consoles (instead of PS4 and Xbox One) and using locally hosted servers to support it.
Darrah explained that this system helps lower the costs of keeping the game running. Instead of using dedicated servers, the game utilizes one of the players’ machines to act as the server.
So, Darrah was talking about Anthem and how it really affected everyone who worked on it. He actually said he doesn’t think he ever fully recovered from the experience, and that a lot of the team feels the same way. It sounds like it was a pretty intense project, even after it was over.
According to Darrah, the game Anthem significantly harmed the careers and well-being of many game developers. He believes that some of BioWare’s more recent struggles can be traced back to the period surrounding Anthem’s development. While he doesn’t attribute everything that’s happened since 2019 to Anthem, he says the game caused lasting problems that have continued to affect the studio.
