Fans are eagerly awaiting the third season of Severance, but Apple TV+’s other shows offer a great alternative while we wait. Apple TV+ has become known for high-quality, captivating series like For All Mankind, The Morning Show, Pluribus, and Ted Lasso. While Severance by Dan Erickson is a standout, another science fiction drama is proving to be just as compelling.
Apple TV+ has quickly become known for its excellent science fiction shows, including Severance, For All Mankind, Foundation, and Invasion. The latest addition, Silo, which premiered in May 2023, is based on Hugh Howey’s 2011 novel Wool—the first book in a three-part series. While the first season covered the events of Wool, the upcoming third season of Silo promises to take the story in exciting new directions.
Silo Is Returning For Season 3 In July
I was completely hooked by the first episode of Silo, especially with Rashida Jones and David Oyelowo in it! But the show really centers around Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson. She’s a really smart engineer living in this massive underground bunker, and things get crazy when the sheriff, Holston Becker (also Oyelowo), decides he wants to go outside – to the toxic wasteland! He actually chooses Juliette to take his place, believing there’s something beautiful out there, which is a really intriguing setup.
In this series, Nichols begins a dangerous investigation into the death of her partner, which leads to unsettling revelations about the world she lives in. Britt Robertson is fantastic as Juliette Nichols, and the entire cast delivers impressive performances – including standout work from Tim Robbins, Common, Harriet Walter, Avi Nash, Chinaza Uche, and Steve Zahn.
With a brilliant story, perfect timing, and a strong connection to its original mysterious and bleak world, Silo is one of the most captivating shows on television. That’s why fans are eagerly awaiting the start of Season 3.
The series will return in December 2024 with new episodes, followed by a fourth and final season at a later date. These final seasons will cover the events of the “Shift” and “Dust” novels, bringing the story to a conclusion. Before the series ends, Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on July 3, 2026, and will delve deeper into the world of the Silo, as well as explore its distant past.
Silo & Severance Share Many Similar Themes
Fans are eagerly anticipating the third season of Silo, but another popular Apple TV+ show is also on many minds. Severance, which debuted in February 2022, captivated audiences with its story of Lumon employees who have undergone a procedure to divide their work and personal memories.
The shows Silo and Severance both feature two versions of people: an ‘innie’ who lives entirely within a contained world, and an ‘outie’ who exists only in the outside world. Though the basic ideas behind each show are different, they explore similar themes and use recurring imagery, making them great to watch together. A key similarity is that innocent people are stuck inside complicated systems – Lumon’s headquarters for the innies, and the silo communities themselves for the residents.
Both societies feature those in charge withholding crucial information, which the main characters – Patricia Arquette and Seth Milchick (played by Tramell Tillman) – slowly begin to discover. The silo itself is controlled by the rigid Mayor Bernard Holland (Robbins) and head of security Robert Sims (Common).
The communities in these stories have developed unusual rules that people strongly resist changing. For example, in Severance, everything connected to the revered Kier Eagan is treated as sacred, and in Silo, there’s a strict ritual for cleaning the camera before it leaves the confines of the silo.
Both shows create a uniquely unsettling mood with their use of technology that feels like a vision of the future from the past. They also have a lot in common – mysterious storylines, tight, enclosed spaces, oppressive villains, and a focus on characters feeling trapped in their own minds. If you’re a fan of Severance and eagerly awaiting Season 3, Silo is a great sci-fi series to watch in the meantime.
What Does the Future Hold For Silo & Severance?
While both Silo and Severance are popular Apple TV+ shows, the time between seasons has been noticeably different. Severance first aired in 2022, but fans had to wait until 2025 for its next season – a much longer gap than with Silo.
I’ve been really into Silo – the first season dropped on Apple TV in 2023, and they’ve already released a second in 2025 with the third coming out this year, and a fourth isn’t far behind! We actually have a pretty good idea of where Silo is going, especially with Season 3 focusing on Juliette Nichols and her amnesia as they dig into the silo’s history. But honestly, Severance is a different story – its future is much more uncertain.
Apple Studios acquired the rights to the show in February, potentially opening the door for additional seasons and related series. At the time of the purchase, six scripts for Season 3 of Severance were already completed, with more being written.
Now that Apple Studios has acquired the rights to Severance for around $70 million from Fifth Season, the show’s future looks promising. The second season ended with Mark S. (Adam Scott) deciding to remain with Helly R. (Britt Lower), preventing a reunion between his outside self and his seemingly deceased wife (Dichen Lachman)—a storyline that will likely continue in Season 3.
Dan Erickson, along with director and executive producer Ben Stiller, is apparently planning to significantly expand the world of Severance. This might involve creating prequel stories, spin-off shows, and even versions for different countries—all exploring more about Lumon Industries and the Severance procedure itself.
Fans will need to wait until July 2026 for Season 3 of Silo to satisfy their craving for science fiction. While it’s exciting news, this season also signals the start of the show’s final chapter.
