Apple’s new action comedy is proving popular on Apple TV+, even though it received poor reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Apple TV+ has quickly become a major streaming service thanks to its exclusive shows and movies, but many viewers aren’t fully aware of all the content available. Occasionally, a release like this one gains traction as more people discover its quality.
Just released earlier this week on Apple TV, The Family Plan 2 has already become the most popular movie on the platform, according to data from FlixPatrol. Despite receiving very negative reviews from critics – a 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews – and a lukewarm reception from audiences (37% average score), the film is proving to be a hit with viewers.
What’s Going on With The Family Plan 2?

Currently, The Family Plan 2 is the most popular title on Apple TV, with the original The Family Plan from 2023 right behind it. The first movie didn’t get great reviews – critics gave it a 29% rating based on 38 reviews – though audiences were more positive, giving it a score of 60% from over 1,000 reviews. Despite the mixed reception, the first film performed well enough to earn a sequel. However, the way the films are connected raises some concerns.
The movie The Family Plan started with a good premise: Mark Wahlberg played a former hitman trying to live a normal life with his family. Trouble arrives when his father and an ex-girlfriend show up seeking revenge, pulling everyone into his dangerous past. The sequel faces a challenge because it needs to build on that initial, self-contained story while expanding into a larger, global adventure. This new storyline takes the family to London, where they confront a previously unknown member of the assassin family – played by Kit Harrington, known from Eternals and Game of Thrones, as the villain.
Will The Family Plan Continue?

Despite receiving poor reviews, The Family Plan is probably going to get more sequels. While the second movie does offer a satisfying conclusion to the story, its very existence suggests the possibility of future installments. If the film continues to perform well on streaming platforms – and it’s already led viewers to watch the original – we can expect another movie to be made.
Apple TV+ has a wide range of shows and movies, but it’s been lacking family-friendly action comedies like The Family Plan. While there are plenty of options for kids and adults separately, finding something everyone can enjoy together has been difficult. Because it’s set during the holidays, the movie has potential to become even more popular in the coming months.
