Apple TV has become known for quality shows that often fly under the radar. While many are excellent, not everything they produce is a success. For example, their attempt to follow up the popular series *Justified* didn’t quite capture the same audience.
Despite a string of recent hits like *Severance*, *The Studio*, and *Slow Horses* – all of which received over 90% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes – the new series *The Last Frontier* hasn’t been well-received. Critics initially gave it a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that score has since fallen. It also hasn’t found a large audience, failing to rank among the most-watched shows after premiering on October 10th, according to FlixPatrol.
The new series *The Last Frontier* premiered in sixth place in the U.S. on October 10th, briefly climbing to second place from October 12th to 14th. However, it has since fallen to fourth place. Currently, *The Morning Show*, starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, is the most popular show. *Slow Horses* and *Loot* are also performing better than *The Last Frontier*.
The show has become a global hit, ranking third worldwide behind *Slow Horses* and *The Morning Show*. After its release, it reached number one in 68 countries where Apple TV+ is offered, and remained at the top spot in 20 of those countries.
This thrilling new series features Jason Clark as Frank Remnick, a U.S. Marshal from a small town near Fairbanks, Alaska. He’s tasked with keeping his community safe after a major security breach causes several prisoners to escape. The show was created by Jon Bokenkamp (known for *The Blacklist*) and Richard D’Ovidio, and also stars Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Tait Blum, Dallas Goldtooth, and Alfre Woodard.
The Last Frontier Divided the Critics and Audiences
The show premiered with two episodes on October 10th, but critics weren’t impressed. It initially received a 57% rating based on reviews, which has since fallen to 41% after 17 reviews. However, Keeley Brooks from Loud and Clear Reviews called it “a very well-written series full of thrilling action and emotional depth, standing out as the underdog hit of the year,” and John Serba of Decider praised its “good start.”
Despite some negative feedback, Alison Herman noted that *The Last Frontier* is most fun when it feels like a classic network TV show – a tough, relatable dad fighting waves of escaped criminals, one episode at a time. However, she pointed out the show often abandons this straightforward approach, getting bogged down in a complicated spy storyline that lacks the clear setting and fast pace of its main action.
Viewers gave the thriller series *The Last Frontier* a somewhat positive rating, but it’s currently just above average. Based on fewer than 50 reviews of the first two episodes, the show has a 67% rating, and this score is likely to change as more people share their opinions.
The Last Frontier releases new episodes every Friday until its Dec. 5 season finale.
