Aqua Announces Breakup Nearly 30 Years After Releasing “Barbie Girl”

Aqua has dropped some not-so-fantastic news.

The popular Danish-Norwegian eurodance group, featuring René Dif, Søren Rasted, and Lene Nystrøm in their latest iteration, has decided to break up after 30 years together.

On May 19th, the band AQUA announced on Instagram that they’ve decided to stop performing live. They shared that being in AQUA has been an amazing experience and they’re grateful for everything they’ve achieved together, exceeding all their expectations.

The creators of “Barbie Girl” have thanked their fans for all the support and experiences over the years. They’ve had the chance to travel extensively, meet amazing people, perform for millions, and create lasting memories.

The band decided to end things while they were still successful, wanting to finish strong and protect their reputation. This decision came almost ten years after their original member, Claus Norreen, departed.

After all this time, you just know when it’s time to shield something special, something you’ve built together. And honestly, for them, it just felt right to say goodbye now, while everything – the memories, the music, even their connection – is still so vibrant and beautiful. It’s like they wanted to preserve the magic, you know? It breaks my heart, but I get it. They’re doing what’s best to keep everything perfect in my mind, and I’ll cherish it forever.

One of Aqua’s biggest successes was their 1997 song, “Barbie Girl.” Despite being a commercial hit, the song caused Mattel to sue the band for trademark infringement, but the lawsuit was dropped after five years. Years later, the song was sampled by Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj for the soundtrack of the 2023 Barbie movie.

When the movie Barbie came out, Lene, the lead singer of Aqua, told Variety that great songs have lasting power, and ‘Barbie Girl’ is a perfect illustration of that.
