Before becoming the powerful King of Gondor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Aragorn was first presented as “Strider,” a simple Ranger from the northern wilderness. Interestingly, Tolkien originally envisioned a very different character – one with a much sillier name, and who wasn’t even human!
Aragorn Was Named “Trotter” in Tolkien’s First Version of The Book
The Planned Introduction To Strider Originally Went Very Differently
Most authors don’t share their early drafts or abandoned ideas, but Christopher Tolkien dedicated years to collecting and publishing his father’s writings – including drafts, letters, and even fragments of notes. Because of the release of The Return Of The Shadow: The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part One, fans can now trace the development of Frodo’s journey, seeing how J.R.R. Tolkien wrote, revised, and refined the story at every stage.
One of the most surprising parts of the early manuscript is when the Hobbits arrive in Bree and meet a secretive contact of Gandalf’s. Interestingly, the character who later becomes known as Strider isn’t present yet. Instead, he’s introduced as a man named Trotter. This traveler admits to feeling uneasy around the infamous Black Riders, and earned his nickname from the clicking sounds made by his unusual wooden shoes.
The ‘Wild Hobbit’ Version of Aragorn is Still Hard To Believe
How Different Could Tolkien’s Trilogy Have Been If Trotter Remained?
Those who love Tolkien’s books are aware that the Aragorn in the movies wasn’t exactly as portrayed in the original stories. However, no film adaptation or reimagining could ever match the depth of character development Tolkien himself created.
Fans will see Aragorn next when The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum arrives in December 2027.
