Embark Studios revealed that the next in-game event for ARC Raiders, called Riven Tides, begins April 28th. Unlike previous events that rewarded players based on how much loot they collected, this Expedition will reward players for the amount of damage they inflict on enemies. Players will still earn skill points as they progress.
In a recent blog post, the studio explained that they’re shifting focus away from rewarding players with valuable items. They believe that a fun experience is more important than monetary gain. Instead of basing Expedition rewards on how much loot you collect, they’re now focusing on challenges and objectives based on combat and completing tasks. This encourages players to use their loot during the Expedition rather than saving it up.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited about the Expedition rewards! They’re broken down into three levels. The first time you complete it, you get a cool Patchwork Outfit, an Expedition icon to show off, a Janitor Cap for Scrappy, and 12 extra stash spaces – plus, you’ll earn between 0 and 5 permanent skill points. If you run the Expedition a second time, you’ll get upgraded versions of the outfit and icon, a Beanie for Scrappy, another 12 stash spaces, more skill points (0-5 again), and you can even snag any skill points you missed the first time around!
Completing the third Expedition will unlock new upgrades for your outfit and icon, a Turban cosmetic for Scrappy, and 12 extra storage slots (bringing your total to 36). You’ll also gain between 0 and 5 skill points, and have another opportunity to earn any skill points you may have missed previously.
Embark Studios announced that completing the third Expedition will unlock the complete Patchwork outfit, and the fourth will start a new Expedition series. They’re also planning to improve future Expeditions based on player feedback, particularly regarding rewards. They want to make sure rewards feel earned and reflect player accomplishments. They’re aware players are worried about losing progress and are working on a system where more progress carries over between Expeditions, rather than being fully reset.
In an interview with Game Maker’s Notebook, design director Virgil Watkins discussed this change and the overall skill tree, admitting it was a challenging aspect of development and that they weren’t completely satisfied with the final result.
He explained that some current abilities aren’t being used effectively. While he’s not a fan of minor improvements, he understands they have value. He prefers changes that unlock completely new capabilities, like being able to do something that wasn’t possible before, rather than just making small adjustments.
It’s unclear if Embark Studios will make big changes to the skill tree in ARC Raiders, but a developer admitting it’s currently a bit boring suggests they might add skills that do more than just slightly improve numbers.
ARC Raiders is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
