Bethesda’s updated version of Oblivion was popular with players, even with some technical problems, and the company hopes to generate the same excitement for its future releases that it saw when the remake came out in April.
Bethesda seems to really like surprising fans by releasing its games with no warning – just dropping them unexpectedly and letting the excitement build.
Tom Mustaine, director at Bethesda Game Studios, says Todd Howard, the company’s head, is the driving force behind their strategy of unexpectedly releasing games without prior announcement.
Dave Mustaine shared with GamesRadar that Todd Howard, the head of Bethesda, has long been a fan of surprise releases. Mustaine explained that Howard likes being able to immediately offer fans a new game, saying, ‘Here you go, play it today!’ He believes this approach is incredibly beneficial.
Mustaine shared his thoughts on releasing music quickly, noting that people today have short attention spans. He used the example of a game like Grand Theft Auto, where fans want instant access. He thinks this approach is interesting and hopes the recent remaster isn’t the last release from the band.
We find his strategy interesting, but we don’t believe simply releasing something unexpectedly will ensure it’s successful.
With Oblivion, it’s important to remember the game was leaked several times before its surprise release. While there wasn’t a traditional marketing push from the company, a campaign did happen – it was fueled by fans instead.
Considering how long major game projects can take these days – sometimes five years or more – we understand Bethesda’s approach. It’s likely a better strategy to reveal a game closer to its release than to announce it years in advance.
