In a recent interview on “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen, Arnold Schwarzenegger disclosed that the movie which brought him the highest earnings was none other than “Twins.” Interestingly, Schwarzenegger and his co-star Danny DeVito didn’t receive salaries for the film. Instead, they agreed to a percentage of the film’s profits after its release. Although he didn’t disclose the exact figure, Schwarzenegger did confirm that the earnings exceeded $40 million. Additionally, he mentioned plans for a “Twins” sequel, titled “Triplets,” which would have featured Eddie Murphy as the third sibling. However, these plans were ultimately abandoned.
Schwarzenegger mentioned that the movie ‘Twins’ was special because they didn’t receive a salary upfront, but had a share of the profits instead, which turned out to be terrific. Cohen attempted to guess the exact amount Schwarzenegger earned, suggesting it was significantly more than $20 million. However, when Cohen confirmed it was over $40 million, he declined to reveal the precise figure, merely stating that it was more than any other movie he had ever made.
Regarding a possible sequel titled “Triplets,” Schwarzenneger mentioned that it never came to fruition because the director, Ivan Reitman, sadly passed away right before filming was set to begin. Additionally, he confirmed that Eddie Murphy was initially chosen to play the third sibling in the movie, but at one point, Murphy dropped out of the project and was subsequently replaced by Tracy Morgan.
In 2016, during an interview with Graham Bensinger (who is more known for sports than entertainment), Arnold Schwarzenegger disclosed the payment structure for his role in Twins. At the time, Universal Pictures had reservations about casting him in a comedy due to his fame from action films. They doubted his capacity to deliver a successful comedy performance. However, the movie could only move forward if Schwarzenegger agreed to receive back-end profits instead of a fixed salary. He mentioned that Danny DeVito and Paul Reitman also accepted similar deals, and they all reaped substantial benefits as a result. Schwarzenegger stated that taking this risk was one of the best decisions he ever made in his career.
These twins brought in a staggering $216 million revenue, surpassing their initial production investment of $18 million, plus any additional earnings from sales, rental rights, and syndication. The idea for a sequel was initially proposed in 2012, but after numerous years of planning, it was set to start filming in January 2022. Regrettably, the original director, Reitman, passed away in February 2022. Since then, Schwarzenegger has shared that the sequel will not move forward, even under a new director.
