A manga artist who was previously removed from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump after an arrest was secretly creating a new series under a different name. This is part of a larger issue involving publisher Shogakukan and the Manga One platform. Several well-known artists, including those behind Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and One-Punch Man, have withdrawn their work from Manga One because of Shogakukan’s collaboration with a creator involved in controversy.
The manga series Operation Fallen Angel was cancelled after it was discovered that its creator, Yamamoto Shoichi, had a previous conviction for sexual assault. This news also brought to light that Shogakukan and Manga One had been working with Tatsuya Matsuki, the writer of the previously cancelled series Act-Age. Matsuki’s series was cancelled in 2020 following his arrest and indictment for sexually assaulting a minor, and he had been working under a pseudonym since then.
Act-Age Writer Secretly Returns With New Series, The Counselor Through Years and Stars

Shogakukan has stated they have zero tolerance for sexual assault, exploitation, or any violation of human rights, emphasizing that respecting human rights is a company’s most important responsibility. They’ve launched an internal investigation and revealed that Tatsuki Matsuki, the writer of the cancelled series Act-Age, is the person behind the pen name Miki Yatsunami, and is actually writing their newest series, The Counselor Through Years and Stars. Matsuki agreed to this disclosure following public speculation.
Shogakukan addressed concerns by stating they knew about Matsuki’s past but confirmed his sentence had been completed and the probation period had ended. They considered his regret for the incident, his efforts to ensure it wouldn’t happen again, and other relevant factors before choosing him to write The Counselor Through Years and Stars. The company plans to continue monitoring the situation.
What Does This Mean for Shogakukan’s Future?
Tatsuki Muki was convicted of indecent assault in 2000 and received a suspended sentence of a year and a half. This news highlights that Shogakukan, the publisher, has worked with multiple well-known creators who have problematic histories, and they kept those histories secret. While an independent investigation might help, this situation will likely change how manga fans view Shogakukan.
I’m really following the news about Shogakukan and the recent issues with some of their creators. They’ve said they’re going to dig deeper into what happened, specifically looking at how things work within the Manga ONE editorial team and how they choose authors for new projects. As for what’s going to happen with The Counselor Through Years and Stars? Well, we’re still waiting for more information on that front – they haven’t shared any updates yet!
