I often recommend movies to friends and family, but sometimes they seem annoyed when I suggest something new that’s only on Netflix. I get why – Netflix has released a few critically acclaimed films lately, but they’re also known for releasing a lot of content, and not all of it is great.
Let’s be honest, Netflix released a lot of duds in 2025. But even with all the misses, six films absolutely made my subscription worthwhile. Seriously, if you only see six movies from Netflix this year, make them these ones. They’re that good.

Frankenstein
I firmly believe this is Guillermo del Toro’s greatest film, and it’s likely to remain a classic for years to come. While the image of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster is famous, the original movie feels quite old-fashioned now. This new film finally does the character justice, staying true to the novel while also offering a modern and thought-provoking take.
2025 offered a strong year for horror movies, with several well-received films. However, none quite compare to Frankenstein, which stands out as something truly special. It’s also a big-budget production, and that quality is clear throughout the entire film.

The Woman In Cabin 10
I hadn’t seen Keira Knightley in a film for a while, and The Woman in Cabin 10 was a great choice. If you enjoy trying to solve a mystery along with the characters, you’ll love this story about a journalist who thinks she’s seen a crime on a cruise ship, but there’s absolutely no proof it ever happened.
This movie is a real winner – a thrilling mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to the very end, which is exactly what I look for in this genre. Keira Knightley also deserves a lot of credit; she gave an incredible performance, especially considering the challenges of filming on a ship where she had to be careful not to disturb anything between takes.

Jay Kelly
In his new film, Jay Kelly explores the downsides of fame, showing what it costs to be a movie star in Hollywood. The story follows Jay as he grapples with how his career has affected his relationships with loved ones, including old friends and his daughters. Simultaneously, his manager, Ron Sukenick, begins to question his own sacrifices and whether their connection is a genuine friendship or simply a business arrangement.
This film really made me reflect on my life and my connection with my daughter. It’s a sign of a great movie when it leaves you feeling different, no matter who you are – even if you’re not a famous actor who got lucky through someone else.

KPop Demon Hunters
It’s surprising, but I still meet people who haven’t seen KPop Demon Hunters. This is the movie that became Netflix’s biggest hit, had songs from its soundtrack reach the top of the Billboard charts, and even had a successful opening weekend in theaters. The film, about a K-pop group who secretly hunt demons, was a global phenomenon and a huge hit last summer.
Because my daughter is a big K-pop fan, I knew about this movie before most people and was really excited for it. I’ve been anticipating a sequel for a long time, and I’m fascinated by how this film became so popular and how its follow-up will be different.

Train Dreams
Train Dreams is a truly special film, and it’s hard to fully describe why without having experienced it yourself. It follows a man’s life and career over eight decades, showing his journey from working on the railroads to witnessing the dawn of the space age with John Glenn’s flight. Throughout his long life, he also experiences love, joy, and loss.
Joel Edgerton delivers a truly memorable performance in this film, and it’s stayed with me long after watching it. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen recently – the story is set in a world so different from my own, yet I found myself connecting with the character Robert’s internal struggles. I think this movie deserves more recognition; it’s easily one of the best three films I’ve seen all year.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
I was really looking forward to Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which came out in 2025. I love the character Benoit Blanc and enjoy a good murder mystery, but I was also worried about it. It’s unusual for a three-part series to maintain a high level of quality throughout, and I feared this third movie wouldn’t live up to the first two, even though I was hoping it would.
You know, I think the third film ended up being my personal favorite. It’s partly because I’m a huge fan of Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, and Thomas Haden Church, but also, growing up Catholic really resonated with me. The movie weaves in a lot of religious themes that genuinely set it apart and give it a completely different feel from the other Knives Out films. I really enjoyed it, and honestly, I’d love to see them take another big risk with the tone if they decide to make a fourth one.
These movies are all currently streaming on Netflix and are definitely worth watching. However, there are plenty of other new movies on Netflix this year, so don’t limit yourself – explore everything available, even if some don’t quite hit the mark.
