Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating his 35th anniversary this June! SEGA has already started the festivities with some exciting events, and there’s much more planned for fans.
Roger Craig Smith, who has famously voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in games for over a decade, recently told Variety he’ll be appearing at IGN Live this summer.
The event will be held on June 6th and 7th, immediately after the live Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5th.
Smith didn’t directly say whether there would be any announcements about Sonic’s anniversary at the event, but his comments have excited fans and suggest something special might happen in June.
I’m really excited to be involved with IGN Live,” he said. “It’s a fantastic event, and I can’t wait to experience the energy of the crowd and contribute however they need me to.
He continues:
This event is going to be incredibly fun! I’d love to share more details, but that’s up to IGN to announce. I’m really excited and can’t wait to be in Los Angeles for this huge celebration. I have to be careful not to reveal anything confidential, but exciting things are coming, especially with the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s a perfect time to be involved, so I’ll keep things mysterious for now and just say I’m very enthusiastic!
He’s avoiding directly addressing anything about Sonic, but he’s clearly being cautious when discussing the upcoming anniversary and his involvement in the IGN Live event.
Smith has since backpedaled a little after the article caused a stir in the Sonic community:
Considering the character’s anniversary is in June, SEGA is likely to make a big announcement soon, probably at Summer Game Fest, though it could also be at IGN’s show.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the next major Sonic game, often referred to as Sonic Frontiers 2, and many are hoping for a revival or reimagining of the classic Sonic Adventure games.
A rating for a more enhanced version of Sonic Frontiers, potentially called Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition, has recently appeared, suggesting it’s in development.
Whatever the case may be, we’ve no doubt there’s more on the way to celebrate Sonic’s 35th.
