Ubisoft has undergone significant shifts recently, particularly with the Assassin’s Creed franchise. With Jean Guesdon now leading content and creative direction for Codename Hexe at Vantage Studios, several key people have left the project. Clint Hocking has already departed, and most recently, Benoit Richer, the game’s director, has moved to an independent studio.
So, how has this affected the game Hexe? According to YouTuber j0nathan, who has a good track record with Assassin’s Creed leaks, Jean Guesdon—who took over the Assassin’s Creed franchise in February—has been removing all magical elements from Hexe. For instance, a planned feature where players could control a cat has been scrapped. This change might explain why Richer is leaving the project.
He admitted that removing a certain feature—controlling a cat within the game—might seem like a setback, but suggested it could actually accelerate development. He explained that the feature wasn’t fully functional yet and was taking up resources that could be better used elsewhere. While the story won’t be affected, the team is currently prioritizing other aspects of the game. If development goes well, they might revisit the cat control feature later, but it’s not a focus right now.
It’s uncertain whether Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe will be released on its expected date in late 2027, but it looks like Julien Guesdon is having a significant influence on the series. For example, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was originally planned to launch last month, but was delayed due to changes at Ubisoft. Fortunately, it’s now coming out on July 9th – much earlier than the previously rumored 2027 release.
We don’t yet know much about Codename Hexe, including what the game will be about or how it will play. However, according to Guesdon, it will be a different experience than previous Assassin’s Creed games – more focused on story and with a darker tone.
If you’re curious about what’s happening behind the scenes with the game (and how it might relate to this departure), here’s some insight: since Jean Guesdon took charge of the Assassin’s Creed franchise in February, he’s decided to remove all the “magical” elements from Hexe. For example, they were originally planning to…

I think this will actually speed things up. From what I understand, the chat control wasn’t working properly and still needed a lot of improvement. Removing it allows the teams to focus on more important tasks. However, it doesn’t change the fact that…
